patricia cornwell (kay scarpetta series)

I have not read all the books in this series but I feel I have read enough to comment here.
In my opinion the last several books I have read (books later in the series) have taken a nose dive compared to books earlier in the series order. Living in the Richmond, VA area, I enjoyed the books where Scarpetta was based out of Richmond. But the geographic location of the characters and plot isn't the sole reason for my lower ratings on the later books. It seems in these later books there is too much animosity, turmoil, emotional struggle, etc. between the characters and that is what over shadows the main plot (which is solving a crime).
I have kept my distance from this series for about 2 years now and I'm not sure I will be re-visiting it any time soon.

Yes, I agree. The characters are no longer likable. They don't even like themselves. Too much angst.

Completely agree that the characters are no longer likeable. I also feel like the Scarpetta character keeps putting herself in some bonehead dangerous situations that don't even merit sympathy from the reader.

I used to love the Scarpetta books and I have quite a few of them but I stopped reading them. It seemed the story was different but as has been said, the situations she seems to find herself in was too similar to the one before and the one before that.

I refuse to throw the ones I have away just in case I decide to re-read but up to now I haven't wanted to go back to them
