There are three Reilly books that have the same central character - Ice Station, Area 7 and Scarecrow (Ice Station being the first). The other two books, Temple and Contest, are completely stand-alone.
A fellow Irving fan :D I have read a fair few of his books and would rank them in the following order (best first):
World According to Garp
Prayer for Owen Meany
Cider House Rules
Hotel New Hampshire
Widow for One Year
Son of a Circus
The Fourth Hand
The Water Method Man
So, in...
I'll get in with this one before Phil but Matthew Reilly is a good action writer - some of the plots are a bit of a stretch of the imagination but the characters are certainly subject to peril on every page! He has written four books, I think, but I would recommend Ice Station or Temple as a...
that is another idea - get rid of the bed in the spare room and make her sleep on the floor - I don't suppose she will be able to handle that for three months! Thanks for all the tips!
I am sure I win the 'my Monday sucks most' competition - I found out today that my mother in law is coming to stay with us for THREE MONTHS - aghhhhhhh
you are right! Marquez has won - I love getting completely immersed in his world and such rich language! Marquez it is.
Kaz, Chevalier also looks really good so I will read this one straight after :)
Martin, I was typing my response when you were posting - not sure that third opinion helps! I am absolutely terrible at knitting and end up with more holes that anything else :(
ok, now I am still stuck. I love Marquez but it always takes me a little while to get into it and I am not sure I have the energy on a Friday afternoon. On the other hand, I have never read Chevalier so this is completley new territory. I need a third opinion!
I have just finished reading the Serpentwar Saga by Feist and am trying to choose my next book - in my drawer I have:
Of Love and Other Demons - Marquez
Girl with a Pearl Earring - Tracy Chevalier
No Second Chance - Harlan Coben
Now, obviously all three of these are a bit of change from...
I have read a couple of books by John O'Farrell and both were excellent - light hearted, amusing and easy to read. 'This is your life' is one I would definately recommend if you fancy something lighthearted and laugh-out-loud funny. It is about a 'normal' bloke who manages to somehow get...
I recently read 'Faerie Tale' by Feist and would definately recommend it. The blurb of the back is:
'A contemporary fantasy novel about the Hastings family who move from California to upstate New York into a ramshackle, old house in a deep wood and become involved in ancient, Celtic magic...
Rampaging over the tarmac, brandishing a vorpal blade, cometh Lyra! And she gives a gutteral bellow:
"I'm going to flog you beyond capacity, and then some!"
I'll have to try this on my other half when I get home from work and see what reaction I get :)
