    Anthony Trollope

I think your question is a very valid one. I will answer, in part, by making reference to the collected letters of Wallace Stevens. Someone asked him about a certain published poet, and Wallace Stevens said of that poet, "He does not write as though he MUST write." Now one might take that...

    Anthony Trollope

Yes, Proust, that "À la Recherche.." fellow. I did not know there was a Prost. I know nothing of sports. My understanding is that Proust had enough money not to worry about every shilling and farthing and pound and quid and haipenny and "God bless you."

Very good. Thanks. Most likely, it was the extreme poverty of his childhood, which he relates, that made him so conscious of the monetary aspect of writing. I do not imagine that Proust, for example, gave such careful consideration to finances.

    Anthony Trollope

Trollope ends his autobiography with a chronological list of every novel, together with the total money earned from each novel, totalling almost 70,000 Pounds Sterling. He was quite proud of the total pages he produced in his lifetime...

    Anthony Trollope

Trollope writes regarding farming: Nowadays, the family farms have all but vanished. There is a picturesque tourist area somewhere in Switzerland or Germany, where the government subsidized the small farms, simply to preserve the charm of the area for the sake of tourism.

    Movie Survey

Very perceptive! I believe Mr. Shovel has hit the nail on the head. May I say, as a non-sequitur, that I recently rented the DVD version of Derailed. What a gripping, surprising plot! Perhaps, what follows, is germane to this thread, as a suggestion of how to broaden one's tastes. I...

    Movie Survey

This list of movies came to me as part of a just for fun survey at myspace.com You are supposed to check off which ones you have seen. If you total is less than 10 or more than 50 then you do not have a life (according to the survey). I do not have access to the program that administers...

    Taking Chances

A wonderful newspace.com friend has written to me the following: It is difficult to trust, especially if we have been hurt many times. It is difficult to take a chance and risk possibly being hurt or disappointed. Just today, a Yahoo friend in Nigeria contacted me, after a months of...

    Salman Rushdie: The Satanic Verses

Sorry to be so late in responding to your post. To understand the significance of the opening page of "The Satanic Verses", where Gabreel Farishta and his companion are tumbling through the sky, falling from an airplane to earth, we must understand Islam's account of how the Qu'ran was revealed...

You know your in the 21st century when..

Here is a synopsis of what I posted yesterday in the Yahoo chat room for books and literature, regarding the superiority of message boards and blogs over live chat: On the other hand, I have met a few people in chat of the caliber of SFG75, whom I would not have met had I not been in a chat...

(just passing this along for your amusement) You know you live in the 21st century when... 1. You go to a party, sit down and take MySpace pics. 2. You havent played solitaire with real cards in years. 3. The reason for not staying in touch with your friends is that they don't have...

    Angels & Demons reference?

How interesting, the etymology of Mass. From childhood on I found it a curious term, but never made inquiry into it's origins. The Greeks says Liturgy, which comes from "ourgos" (work, doing, act) [on behalf of the] "laos" (laity, people, mass of persons gathered). Both words have the notion...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayn_Rand Ayn Rand's mother taught her French and subscribed to a magazine featuring stories for boys, where Rand found her first childhood hero: Cyrus Paltons, an Indian army officer in a Rudyard Kipling-style story by Maurice Champagne, called "The Mysterious...
