Movie Survey

Sitaram

kickbox
This list of movies came to me as part of a just for fun survey at myspace.com

You are supposed to check off which ones you have seen. If you total is less than 10 or more than 50 then you do not have a life (according to the survey).

I do not have access to the program that administers and scores the survey. Someone simply posted their own results.

But I thought the list was interesting. The person who sent this commented that some excellent movies have been left off the list.

Which movies would you add to the list?

72, unless some of those titles refer to remakes or anything like that.

Gotta say though, it's not much of a list. Saying "some excellent movies have been left off the list" is a bit like calling the Grand Canyon a hole in the ground.

I've seen over 100 of those  There's some good ones in there but a few of my favorite movies are missing though.

Since I've seen about 45 of these films, and durned near don't have a life, I'd add:

American Graffetti

Gone With the Wind

Rio Bravo

McClintock

Hook

Last of the Dog Men

Father Goose

North By Northwest

Mr Smith Goes to Washington

By the Light Of the Silvery Moon

Mary Poppins

O Brother Where Art Thou

The Ten Commandments

Prince of Egypt

True Grit

Stagecoach

Oklahoma

The list could go on, but I really DO have a life;)

Well I have seen 77 of those and several (hundred) more that aren't on that list. Not quite sure how they decided that you don't have a life if you have seen more than 50 of them - it would take just over 4 years if you only watched one movie a month (which I don't think is excessive). I have certainly been watching movies for longer than 4 years  :D

And since that was long enough, I didn't add any more.

I've seen about eightyfive of those movies, and I think I have a pretty good life. Even now, I'm out and about with my friends a few times a week, and I read a book or two every week. I'm far from a TV addicted loser. I have to question the "validity" of this list as the movies don't seem to have any underlying connection. I don't see much in common between quality flicks like Thirteen or ET and junk like Scary Movie 4.

...I'm guessing the point is that it's not a list of all time great movies, but recentish films that have had a cultural impact...seeing more than ten is enough to show you have your finger on the cultural button, so to speak, with more than 50 perhaps indicating you need to boarden your tastes...

...I've seen 32 btw...

I've seen 51 of those.

I won't make an extensive list but I would've liked to have seen the following on there:

Titanic
Donnie Darko
Requiem For A Dream
Moulin Rouge
Amelie
Dirty Dancing
Bridget Jones 1 & 2
Notting Hill
28 Days Later

To be fair the best film on that list was The Labyrinth

I've seen 58 of them. There were some I didn't bother to include as having seen since I think it refers to remakes that I haven't seen. So I left off the originals of Bedazzled, The Ring, The Ring 2*, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

* Not a remake, but an original sequel to the original remake

Very perceptive! I believe Mr. Shovel has hit the nail on the head.

May I say, as a non-sequitur, that I recently rented the DVD version of Derailed. What a gripping, surprising plot!

Perhaps, what follows, is germane to this thread, as a suggestion of how to broaden one's tastes.

I also rented Fellini's Juliette of the Spirits, his first color film, which came out in 1965. Critics called it to fantastic, fanciful and unstructured. Some say Fellini’s greatest was La Dolce Vita and others cite Amarcord or 8 ½.

Someone once remarked that Fellini's movies are filled with symbols, but they're all obvious symbols. At the beginning of "La Dolce Vita," for example, he wanted to symbolize the gulf between modern, decadent Rome and its history as the center of the Church, so he gave a statue of Christ being helicoptered by pilots who wave and whistle at girls sunning themselves in bikinis. The scene says everything it needs to say, openly and with great economy.

I looked for something by Ingmar Bergman, but found nothing among the rentals. They had a few by Fellini but nothing by Bergman. I saw Fanny and Alexander in a theater around 1983.

A google search informs me that The Seventh Seal is Bergman’s most famous.

Here are some excerpts:

Plot Outline A man seeks answers about life, death, and the existence of God as he plays chess against the Grim Reaper during the Black Plague. Plot Synopsis: A Knight and his squire are home from the crusades. Black Death is sweeping their country. As they approach home, Death appears to the knight and tells him it is his time. The knight challenges Death to a chess game for his life. The Knight and Death play as the cultural turmoil envelopes the people around them as they try, in different ways, to deal with the upheaval the plague has caused.

Ingmar Bergman's 1956 film has been parodied by everyone from Woody Allen to Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, but it remains one of the strangest and richest classics of world cinema. Max Von Sydow plays a knight returning from the Crusades to encounter an apocalyptic scenario inspired by the Book of Genesis. He plays chess with Death (Bengt Ekerot), sees a manacled witch, watches a band of flagellants go by--all of it foretelling an inevitable end to life. Unabashedly allegorical and lyrical and existing in a world unto itself, the film is enormously mesmerizing no matter what one thinks of the weighty meanings Bergman has attached to it all.

Ingmar Bergman's THE SEVENTH SEAL is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest films ever made, which may scare away some viewers. The film is also a meditation on death and religion, which may also make some people hesitant to watch it. I know I avoided it for some time, but the film is really pretty enjoyable. If you consider yourself to be a true film buff, you really have to see this movie.

Max von Sydow, in the role that made him famous, stars as a disillusioned knight returning from the crusades in the 14th century. He is traveling with his squire, and they meet a number of people along the way, including an acting troop and a blacksmith and his wife. One of these visitors is Death, and the Knight tries to bargain for his life. Death accepts the knight's offer of a game of chess. As long as the game continues, the knight can live.
The movie is laden with symbolism, often of a religious nature, and filmed in stark black and white. Although the movie is serious and cerebral in tone, there is also a surprising element of humor and lightness. If you approach this film with an open mind, you will probably end up enjoying it, although it isn't for all audiences. Highly recommended for discerning film fans.

I've seen 20 of them. But I would not say that any of them are among my favorites.

Well.....except The Pink Panther.

..somewhere tucked away, possibly at my mother's house I have a graphic novel written by Fellini from about 15-20 years ago...comics being considered much more of a legitimate art form on continental Europe at that time than in Britain and America...I forget the plot, but it seem to remember it had his touch...having done a bit of searching on the interweb I think it might be called "Trip to Tulum"...
