Very admirable. No one likes criticism. Since you're being so honest, I wonder if you feel like Palindrome Hannah was the best you were capable of writing at the time, or do you feel like it would've been much better if you'd gotten more feedback and worked harder on revisions?

Only up to a point. Anne Rice was obviously never a vampire and JK Rowling never went to wizard school. Many readers want to read about incredible places they've never been to before. Imagining those places, and imagining the characters reactions to them, is an important part of the...
I think it's a thick line. Anyone can create a caricature in a couple of minutes. Compelling characters take an enormous amount of work and at least a little bit of talent.

I see you've decided to read A Prayer. I hope you post your review. It's been a while since I read it, but I really enjoyed it and thought it was the best of his that I've read.
A common problem for writers. You write, because you have something to say. You quickly find out, however, that no one is interested in what you have to say, readers just want to be entertained.
The movie stayed pretty true to the book. Much of the dialogue was taken from the book word for word. Probably why the movie was so good. That, and Anthony Hopkin's performance.
Does a book that has 25 million hard cover in print have "a greater status, more prestige and appeal to more hardcore literary types?" than a paperback? Based on some of the comments here, I'd say no.
