    'You' in narrative

How do you feel about reading 'you' in narrative? For instance, He turned off the light. The afterglow created a ghostly image, like when you're half-asleep and think someone's in the room with you. As a reader, it jars me out of the story. I see a lot of writers doing it lately. I wonder...

    Would you read on?

Thanks for the replies. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the second draft. So, about half-way done! lol

    The "I write like" website

I went to the Lorem Ipsum text generator and got it to generate 5 paragraphs of dummy text. When I pasted it into the I Write Like site, it said I write like David Foster Wallace. That says something about either Wallace's writing or the I write like site. :p

JK Rowling being sued for plagiarism

Ideas can't be copyrighted. Only the words can.

    Would you read on?

This is the beginning of my current WIP, a science fiction. If you picked up a book in the bookstore and read this opening, would you put it back on the shelf or take it to the cash register? Monday, June 5, 2023 Protesters marched up and down the public sidewalk outside the Center...

    Urban fantasy anyone?

I've been a long-time fan of Charles de Lint, but he's the only urban fantasy writer I've read. I feel like I must be missing out on other wonderful authors/books in the genre. Any recommendations? Thanks!

    Is amazon good for customers?

Amazon is a business like any other, and nobody is forced to buy from them or through them. They offer a great service to customers, and publishers that refuse to do business with them will lose sales. It's ultimately their choice. If I can't find a book I want on Amazon, I check B&N or any...

    Need a new VAMPIRE book

I'd agree with whoever said Ann Rice. Interview with the Vampire was awesome. She makes readers want to be a vampire. Vampire LeStat was good too, but I didn't really get into the rock star thing. Queen of the Damned took the series in a different direction, and I didn't like it as much as the...

    Fyodor Dostoevsky

As a Russian major, I read Crime and Punishment while I was in college. It was quite difficult to read (& discuss!) in Russian, but I was amazed and impressed by the story. I even named one of my dogs after the main character. :)

    Jack London

As a kid, I adored White Fang and Call of the Wild. I don't recall whether I read any others, but those two stood out for me.

Who is your favourite author, and why?

I have to agree with the readers who like Robin Hobb. Her writing is almost musical without being purple, and she tells a darn good story. I also like David Brin and Charles de Lint and George R.R. Martin... :)

    Hi! I'm KC

Fantasy is like that too, but broader. With science fiction, we have to base our fictional science on real science. With fantasy, we make up all the rules. Both genres require good writing, characterization and plotting to sell, but SF tends to be more forgiving if it has the wow factor to make...

    Hi! I'm KC

The first published novel was epic fantasy. The current work-in-progress is a science fiction. Writing's a blast, isn't it?

    The "I write like" website

Beware of this site. Author James D. Macdonald wrote an article about it called "Further Thoughts on “I Write Like”" and posted it on Patrick & Teresa Nielsen Hayden's website Making Light. I can't post the URL 'cause I'm a newbie, but if you google Nielsen Hayden, it'll come up.

Red Revenge (please tell me if the first chapter is any good)

My advice: try to avoid using 'was' so much, especially in the beginning. Find more interesting verbs, and put things into motion. This is describing a state of being for an object, but nothing is happening. Maybe you could describe how the bandanna starts to slip down and Jack pushes it back...
