A postcard with pigs on it.

    Are you a re-reader?

Sometimes. There are probably 4-5 books I've re-read so far. Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four holds the record with 2 re-reads.

Amazon.com is the best way to get good American fiction shipped to this part of the world.

I liked his humor and characters. At times, I found the dialogue a bit forced, but it is still a great book. I think Max is right up there with Carl Hiaasen and Christopher Moore. Unfortunately, he is having trouble getting his latest novel out. To find out more, see homepage at maxbarry.com

The title isn't too inviting, but the story is actually about one man's road to maddness. Written diary-style, it gets under your skin. (I've read few pages.) It is a bit like Hubert Selby's The Demon.

So true. I bought Max Barry's Company to keep some kind of balance.

    Books you didn't finish

Chekhov of the Suburbs The Stories of John Cheever. Bought it so I could read his short story titled The Swimmer. (Liked the 1968 movie adaptation starring Burt Lancaster.)

    Best small press books?

Not every good book gets published by Random House or HarperCollins. What is your favorite small press book? How did you hear about it? I enjoyed Chris Genoa's Foop! (A bizarre science fiction comedy that has some similarities with Kurt Vonngut's books.) I found it while browsing Amazon.com.

    Best Book You Ever Read

Orwell Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. I like classic dystopian novels and this one is simply the best. It is a cautionary tale about herd mentality. (Something that is very popular these days...)

    Late Night Reading

Amis Money by Martin Amis. It kept me up past midnight.

From the editing room - Nolens

This is something that was cut from my forthcoming novel. Stylewise it just didn't fit the story. I sit in the dark closet of my parents’ bedroom with only a few beams of piercing daylight entering underneath the door and wonder what dying must be like. Theories about the afterlife vary, but...

    Writing tips from Kurt Vonnegut

Tip of the day Here is one more tip: "If you can't annoy somebody with what you write, I think there's little point in writing." -Kingsley Amis

    Chuck Palahniuk

Choke on peanuts I loved Choke and Survivor. The monkey scene in Choke was so weird and explicit that I can't help wondering how the publisher didn't cut that out.

Hi, I'm a just another newbie. My favorite authors include John Steinbeck, George Orwell, Hubert Selby and Kurt Vonnegut. "Enough noise to waken the dead, but not to waken this lot, I thought. I felt as if I was the only person awake in a city of sleep-walkers." -Orwell: Coming up for Air
