There are excellent novels which provide anti-hero perspectives by people not acting for the right reasons, which I do realize you specifically excluded in your question.
But are you really that sure you want to skip the Ripley series by Patricia Highsmith? Or her Strangers on a Train? Or the...
Hi Julee,
I'll gladly join you in your effort to see if anyone cares.
Here are the books I have read recently:
December
Leviathan Rises by James S.A. Corey
Caliban’s War by James S.A. Corey
The Late Show by Michael Connelly
The Next Person You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
January
Dark Sacred...
In looking through this thread I don't think I see Nabokov's Lolita mentioned. In which case, I will.
It is a powerful book, or not, depending on your tastes.
And opinions may, and do, differ about the fidelity to the book of the different movie adaptations which have been made.
Peter Seller's...
Hi Julee,
Wow! I would say you have that genre well-covered!
You mention Hiassen. About the time I read some of his works, I was also interested in two mystery/crime/thriller authors whom you haven't mentioned.
Both of them are McDonalds, with slightly different spellings. John D. McDonald...
Doris,
I agree with your comment about 'a *lot* of looking around' being necessary.
That is one way I have found many of the books I have ended up reading.
The other way is through recommendation from my wife. She is a real book hound and reads books, and also about books, much more widely than...
Juleeming,
Your post is about right in capturing my own rather lukewarm response to Alan Furst's stories, including the selection he read at a book-signing we went to.

(replying to general question for recommendations)
Oh my, there are so many!
But the most recent truly outstanding spy novel I have read, that immediately comes to mind above all others, is I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes.
The ending is fabulous! So take the time to read carefully to get there...
Hi Juleeming,
Nothing at all wrong with reviving discussions of long ago threads -- especially the 'discussions' part.
I, for one, am glad to see your book reviews, which I would say revive an almost lost tradition here at BAR.
So, welcome aboard and keep on posting.
Peder
P.S. and yes, I have...
You Decide
You think The Singularity is near?
You think it can't happen here?
You think Big Brother is a future fear?
You think not a single vote was changed?
Well, you are wrong
on all counts, because:
The Information Singularity is already here.
National Racism is on the rise.
One Mouth...
Fantastic, Gita! I had a completely different Country in mind. ROTFLTIC! :rofl
I guess it's the same the whole world over.
Still can't believe the coincidence.
But wonderful to hear from you. :)
Yesterday I started a reread of "Fire and Fury -- Inside the Trump White House " and, as in the way of many a book, the reread reveals so much more than the original read. Mind boggling, in fact, for this one.
The first time around there was the dazzling name-dropping, the insider gossip...
Soirée
We had long since driven off any of the highways shown on our map and were now making our way further and further into the back country, away from New Hope, with Adele struggling to read the microscopic printed directions and me peering out into the darkness looking for any landmarks or...
And the same to you! Nice to meet you. :)
This one is starting out a little differently for me, as the screen on my main computer has just gone dark. :(
Scrambling looking for repair.
Very best to you,
Peder
