liza marklund

LOLITA smutty?
I have come to these postings 5 years late I guess and agree with the advice of mothers to approach anyone who censors what we read. Even as adults, we can be confronted by people who look at us cross-eyed if we're reading something THEY deem 'filth'. You know who I mean, the...
HARD BOILED DETECTIVE JARGON GLOSSARY
ENJOY
GERBAM
You may need to translate this into normal English just to be able to follow the plot.
Or maybe you want to seem tougher. Why get in a car when you can hop in a boiler? Why tell someone to shut up when you can tell them to close their...
I've read Patricia Cornwell's SCARPETTA and I thought it was terrific. I have read all of her novels and I know that she has stumbled from time to time but I always gave her another chance. Now I'm glad I did ... SCARPETTA is a big book and I read it in a week-end.
:stars4: :D
Thank you for the heads up on the Steig Larsson books. Unfortunately English is the only language I know so I will wait patiently un til THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE is released here in the US.
THANKS AGAIN FOR SHARING
Hard -boiled detectives and the american west
I think your advice is sound. Hammett and Chandler created the 'hard boiled detective' and other writers ran with the idea. The history of the HBD is fascinating if anyone is interested in such trivia. For example Hammett and Chandler took their...
I am almost finished with Tana French's second novel: THE LIKENESS. I enjoyed her first book: IN THE WOODS and when the new one was released I bought it immediately. Took me a little while to get to it but it was worth the wait.
This book has such a far out plot that it morphs into an...
Sometimes a book possesses so many elements of literary merit it takes off like a rocket. "... Tattoo " is one of those novels that become a phenomenon. It is such a well plotted, stylish, interesting and carries the shadow of the writer's death. He was a journalist which makes his style...
Per wahloo and georges simenon are not the only wonderful crime writers in translation. To miss these people is to miss a major element of mystery/thriller/suspense novels.
Try:
henning mankell
peter hoeg
andrea camillieri
luis alfredo garcia-roza
steig larsson
arnaulder indridason...
JCO's CLASSICS
JCO IS CERTAINLY ONE OF THE MOST PROLIFIC WRITERS OF THE 20th-21st CENTURIES. TRUMAN CAPOTE ONCE CALLED HER 'A HUMAN TYPEWRITER.' IT WAS NOT A COMPLIMENT. BUT I CONSIDER OATES A CONTEMPORARY PHENOMENON.
I HAVE READ MORE THAN 2 DOZEN OF HER BOOKS AND HAVE 8 MORE ON MY TBR PILE...
Henning Mankell is a treasure that English speaking people are now able to read. Not unlike Georges Simenon (another master) he has his detective who is a flawed man with many personal problems and who is married to his job. Mankell's 'murders' are fascinating and the way Wollander goes about...
Choice mysteries
HI
LIKE SO MUCH ELSE, FINDING YOUR 'MYSTERY READ NICHE' IS SUCH A SUBJECTIVE AND PERSONAL MATTER. I'VE BEEN READING MYSTERIES FOR MORE THAN 50yrs [YIKES!!!] AND HAVE FOUND THE BEST WAY TO FIND WHO OR WHAT I WANT TO READ IS TO EXPERIMENT, SEARCH AND ASK (AS YOU HAVE) FOR...
I have finally finished ZELDA by Nancy Mitford ... the sad biography of Zelda Fitzgerald ... F, SCott's wife. This is one of the best biographies I have ever read and I know it will stay with me for a long time. I recommend it to anyone who likes to learn about writers and the sometimes crazy...
Locked room mysteries
Landslide
i agreee 'murder on the orient express is one of the best locked room/closed circle mysteries written, and the ending is awesome
Landslide
I am sorry you took my words to heart. I meant no harm. I was just pointing out what I think is interesting about this discussion. Perhaps I should not have shared the long article and if that was a mistake, I apologize.
I happen to agree w/you and the article that any...
Landslide
I think that Poirot and Holmes were created w/different personalities in mind. Remember Doyle didn't write until about 50yrs after Poe ... so his frame of reference was of a detective who used ratiocination which is Sherlock's metier.
Christie wrote Poirot in the 1930s and following...
antony48
yes you are right on ... film is completely separate art from book and should be judged on its own merits
