What's the best opening line of a book (fiction or non)?

Hannibal, I just read that line at work and I cracked up to a room full of people who now think I'm crazy. It was worth it though! I get the feeling you'd appreciate Monty Python sketches.... Oh and Martin the line about the beets is absolutely brilliant, reminds me of the fact that there...

Books you were forced to read at school!

Definitely, Waiting for Godot just astounded me it was such an excellent idea and when the final monologue kicks in it really brings the beauty of the play together. I loved how Beckett insisted that Godot didn't mean anything. I'd like to know what he was like as a person, I always imagined...

Books you were forced to read at school!

I actually quite liked some of the books I read at school, although I'm with you there fluffy bunny, too much lit crit is exhausting and I don't know about you but I tend to get lost in deriving a meaning and forget the beauty of the work. Here's a mixture of what I read at GCSE and A-Level...

The best movie adaptation ever. Requiem for a dream. Discuss..

I'm a big fan of Johnny Depp I thought he was fantastic in Donnie Brasco. Haven't watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but I have heard very good things about the book. Guess that'll be the next one to watch/read.

Feeling Blue, Oh what to do?

I like to eat lots of comfort food like chocolate cake or mash potato and listen to some music with of course a really engrossing book. Jogging or something as mind numbing as the gym helps too, just so I can be lost in my own thoughts. I love the lion faces idea, made me laugh just...

The best movie adaptation ever. Requiem for a dream. Discuss..

Watched the film last night, it was amazing! I loved all the parallels between the day to day legal addictions in life, like coffee and the same sort of ritual preparation. I think you're right about the film as a book because I don't think it would've worked as well. Saying that I haven't...

Based on this information, what other books do you think I would enjoy?

How about Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck? Absolute classic.

    Novels about the late 90's

Not sure if this will help, but Hanif Kureishi wrote a book called Intimacy, which I thought was very much about the 90's man, sort of disillusioned and misplaced. He has written many books that cover modern life including Love in a Blue Time. Hope that helps!

    BBC's The Big Read - Top 100

Some of the books definitely wouldn't make my list but I have read 34, probably because I was forced to read Dickens at school. Didn't put me off reading thankfully!

Now, for all the ladies...best romantic movie

Especially the bit where she talks about a kiss being like sharing a little part of someone's soul. Gorgeous! I have to say When Harry Met Sally and Casablanca are real classics so I definitely agree with you there Ell.

Now, for all the ladies...best romantic movie

I loved French Kiss with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline, I know it's dead cheesy but I just loved how it was set in Paris and Kevin Kline was such a scallywag! I did see a film abolutely ages ago with a blonde gangster's mole and it was set in Italy, with an Italian photographer and a bright yellow...

Suggestion: tell us where you're from

Ell how often do you go to Hawaii, it just sounds amazing, in my head it's almost paradise-like! Especially as it seems such a long way away. Was it how you imagined it to be when you first went?

Suggestion: tell us where you're from

I think that would be wonderful to see, the sea never ceases to amaze me with its changing moods. I loved Montmartre, it is exactly how I imagined Paris to be - full of artists and beautiful buildings. Kaz is Amelie worth watching? It's another film I haven't got round to watching.

The best movie adaptation ever. Requiem for a dream. Discuss..

Requiem for a dream....is that the one with Jared Leto playing the lead? I haven't watched or read the book unfortunately but I have been planning to watch the film for quite a while now, I take it you recommend it? Would you recommend reading the book first? I always find that's a bad idea...

Suggestion: tell us where you're from

Poor Eeyore indeed....but how did it taste? What's the most exotic thing you've had to eat in China? Idun I think I could handle the cold weather as long as I had a lovely view of the beach! The last time I went to Paris was when I was 17 and I had the most amazing time. I heard lots of...

Suggestion: tell us where you're from

Idun I'm so jealous I live in the Midlands in England and there aren't any beaches for miles :( I absolutely love beaches I don't think you can beat a long walk along the beach to just think about things. Like Phil, I didn't think of Poland as a beach kind of place but it sounds really...

    food anyone?

Barbecues are fantastic, as long as things aren't burnt! I've tried fish and king prawns on a bbq but nothing beats marinated chicken on a barbecue. True Idun we can't have everything but hey you've got to taste the bitter to really appreciate the sweet (or something like that!).

    food anyone?

....ohhh and coconut rice with king prawns *drool* Macaunese sounds interesting too. Serene you've never had a Mr Whippy either (Although I am a huge fan of anything moussey)?? That's it we have to have a Mr Whippy get together for everyone on the board! Idun I'm sure you can put up with...

    Choosing the next book

Oh I can definitely sympathise with Monday morning brain freeze. Sometimes I end up reading the same sentence about 10 times and even then I've only caught the first word! :o

    food anyone?

Ell if you ever come to the UK I will treat you to one they are just yummy. Kaz lots of people say that about Indian food but if it's made well it won't upset your stomach at all. Sounds like I should treat you to a nice home made curry (mild I promise!). Curry and Mr Whippy ice-cream all...
