I have some Patricia Cornwell novels but haven't really gotten around to them and I have Lee Child's The Killing Floor and I have read it. He is an Excellent writer.
The book you may be referring to might be called "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. I think that is the book your talking about. Try going to wikipedia.org and type in The Giver and read the plot summary.

I would recommend a few authors. Some of my favorites are Tami Hoag, Sharon Sala, Andrea Kane, Heather Graham. Some of their books are quite interesting and the ways people are killed are intriguing.
