Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

I am a castaway, on the island with Cruso and Friday, wondering why he has not kept so much as a journal or even scratched notches into a pole to mark the passing of the years!

    Why you read books ?

I read for entertainment, to widen my scope, to appreciate other points of view, to keep my brain ticking, to make conversations more interesting... the list is long but, in short, I LOVE IT!

What do bookworms do for exercise?

I have an exercise bike in my room (although, I must admit, it serves as more of a clothing rack most days... my array of bags also hang snuggly on the handle bars :>) On second thought, scratch the bike ;) I do have a busy five-year-old and a Wii console - that must count for something?!

So why is a good girl like me writing a book about porn? - Good Vibrations by Ayn Carrillo

Poll: How old is the average reader on this Forum?

I am 31, and have loved books since my early childhood - I literally cut my teeth on Enid Blyton! I am happiest when I'm in a bookstore; usually I find a spot on the floor somewhere and just paw my way through the shelves looking for 'buried treasure'. My home is littered with books and...

    Patrick Süskind: Perfume

Thanks for the heads up - and the link :)

    Patrick Süskind: Perfume

Perfume – rather shocking... I’ve just finished reading Perfume by Patrick Süskind, and was totally shocked at how it ended! In fact, the last few chapters were unexpected, to say the least! Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the book. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever read… I was just wondering if...

    Nicole Krauss

I’ve just finished reading The History of Love, and found the writing nothing short of remarkable! I’m keen to read her first novel, Man Walks into a Room. Has anyone read it?

Passion, charm, suspense - and magic...

I wouldn’t consider it fantasy. If you look at other reviews on the web, the words most often used to describe the book include ‘tender’, ‘enchanting’, ‘charming’, ‘bewitching’ and a ‘delicious love story’. The author, Sarah Addison Allen, has a website – you may want to check it out for some...

Passion, charm, suspense - and magic...

Harry Potter? No it's not the same in any way, I'm afraid :( It's a lot more 'adult' with real-life issues. The 'enchantment' weaves its way subtly through the book...

    He shoots....He scores!!!!!

Hiya hockeycop! Welcome to the forum! A hockey fan? Interesting... we don't do the hockey thing here; I think it must be weather-related. The only ice I come into contact with lives in a tray in my freezer! Rugby is our passion :D

    Hi there.

Welcome! And I have to agree with Anne - the last thing you seem is "boring" :)

    newbie

Hi, Welcome and happy reading! I loved The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit too - although I read them many moons ago! Now I prefer a variety of authors and genres... it keeps things interesting :)

    Ben Elton

I’ve just finished reading Blast from the Past (my first Elton experience), and found it quite ‘dark’ – but also smart and thought-provoking. I think it could be adapted for the stage (or has someone else already thought of this?). Anyway, I know that he’s penned quite a few other novels, so...

Best book you've read so far in 2008

Without a doubt: Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert It has stayed with me in a big way :)

Passion, charm, suspense - and magic...

They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. But I did just that when I spotted Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen hiding on a shelf in a bookstore recently. I liked the cover. Well, I’ve just finished it, and it was stunning! As I wrote in my review for our next book club meeting...
