    BOTM:Suggestions, ideas and opinions

There are three on the list I nominated and one I seconded. I will stand pat, hoping someone will bring one or more of those along to the next round.

    BOTM:Suggestions, ideas and opinions

Me too. That's why I haven't posted on this month's book. I will remove An American Tragedy from my list and replace it with Bill Bryson's Walk in the Woods, thus seconding Bryson.

April 2010: Edith Wharton: The Age of Innocence

I am trying to post a copy of the painting by Mary Cassett called "In the Loge", which I think illustrates the beginning of the story, but cannot figure out how to do it. What is the secret?

    BOTM:Suggestions, ideas and opinions

Maybe at some point we can each remove books from our list of ten in order to double-up on books from someone else's list.

    BOTM:Suggestions, ideas and opinions

I like the idea of scheduling ahead. It would help me on my reading plan as I often lack the time to read the selected books under the current process. I also like the idea of having different genres and including the classics and more current writings.

Suggestions: April 2010 Book of the Month

I'd like to go back to some of the great novels. Here are five I suggested in 2008: An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James

    Sue Grafton

I have read them all, including U. Most of them are set in Santa Theresa which is really Santa Barbara. She got the Santa Theresa name from an earlier Santa Barbara detective writer, Ross Macdonald. I started reading her books because I have ties to Santa Barbara. I can visualize many of the...

When You Read Your Morning Paper,

After scanning the headlines I head straight for the comics, then double back through the sports before I get to the news sections.

November 2009: E.L. Doctorow: Homer and Langley

Part of my dissatisfaction is the book is supposedly based on a true story, but is really fantasy. Doctorow has not tried to understand the Collyers, but instead has built his book out of the skeleton of their lives. It's almost as though he borrowed their lives because he did not have the...

November 2009: E.L. Doctorow: Homer and Langley

I finished the book a couple weeks ago. I found it a pleasant but not very satisfying read. Many of the incidents did not ring true for me (maybe because I'm not from New York). I'm not sure what the author was trying to say when he wrote the book.

June 2009: Salman Rushdie: Midnight's Children

Libra is right on this point. I stalled out at the Methwold chapter several months ago, as noted in my earlier post. Last week, I picked up the book again. Once I got into Part 2, the book began to flow. The jury is still out as to whether I will like the book as a whole. I am enjoying...

June 2009: Salman Rushdie: Midnight's Children

I've been stalled out at the end of the Methwold chapter (page 117 in my edition) and am not sure I will have the gumption to keep going.

    Structural Suggestions

IMO, one suggestion per member would be too stifling. Better to have a rule that says at least one other member needs to bless the nomination before it goes on the voting list. If you end up with a list of more than five and none get a majority of the votes, have a run-off.
