    Stieg Larsson

Arr, I be having a Masters degree, so I be thinkin' I ain't no half-wit and I liked that book . . . arr. Maybe I be thinkin' I should shiver your timbers!!!! Having said that, I only liked the book, not loved it, and it was a bit over-hyped.

"The Lord of the Rings" vs "The Chronicles of Narnia"

    The Dawn-Treader was a goodly ship . . .

    F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby

'Gatsby devoted his entire life to earning a woman's attention, a lady who "got away". I learned that sometimes it's best to forget or let the past go, to learn from it and move on. Or else you may end up in such regret and turmoil, trying to fix something that happened years ago.' *sigh*...

    Agatha Christie

    That'll never happen.

    Neal Stephenson: Snow Crash

Sooooo . . . nothing too complicated or insane then. Excellent.

    Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Vampire Hunter? ARGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I don't understand!!!!!!!!!!!

    Neal Stephenson: Snow Crash

I want to have a look at this Snow Crash. What's it actually about?

    Agatha Christie

Oh, yeah, and I've read The Mystery of the Blue Train. That was pretty good too.

    Agatha Christie

I've recently enjoyed The Body In the Library. It's a Miss Marple, and I've decided that it's a satire. There is NO WAY it's meant to be taken remotely seriously. A policeman actually says: ''Allo, 'allo, 'allo.' This is SATIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stieg Larsson: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

I liked this book. It was slow to grab my interest at first, but then it ran with it.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby

I'm reading Tender Is the Night, and I sincerely hope it gets better. The Great Gatsby - if it wants to be read by me - had better be an improvement on Tender, because so far the literary fireworks ain't airborne.

    Dashiell Hammett

I've just finished The Maltese Falcon, and while it DID hold my attention, I did think it was poorly written. Some people swear by Dashiell Hammett, but I can't see it myself. Sam Spade may have been innovative a character once upon a time, but he isn't now. Maybe Hammett's style has been...

    Evelyn Waugh

Brideshead Revisited's not too bad. It don't deserve all the praise heaped on't, there are aplenty better. But it's worth a peek and filled with champagne and upper-class twits.

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

It does exactly what it says on the tin - 'thriller, with some art history'. The fuss was over all that 'Jesus-had-wife-and-kids-shocker' stuff. Not original: it was done more seriously before in Holy Blood and Holy Grail.

    Patrick O'Brian: Master And Commander

    Why is a dog-watch called a dog-watch? 'Cause it's cur-tailed, HA-HA-HA. (That's one of Stephen's, alas not mine.) It's the lesser of two wevils.

    Patrick O'Brian: Master And Commander

I liked the movie. Shame there ain't gonna be a sequel (sea-quel - did you smoke that? HA-HA-HA).:D

1 great thriller and 1 bad one

1 Great thriller: Bulldog Drummond by Sapper - witty, fun, and unpredictable. Capt. Hugh's a man after my own heart, biffing the filthy boche!! By Jove, that's the spirit!! And it's got a nasty bath. No, really, that's not a typo. 1 Bad thriller: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown - I wish it...

    Edgar Wallace

I loved The Four Just Men - pretty much a perfect thriller: to the point, engaging, a central mystery that isn't revealed until the very last page. And that's bloody ingenious. The Crimson Circle's got a great little howdunit: gas bubbles of heavier-than-air poison gas. The Law of the Just...

The Most Important Book Ever Written?

Arr, I've read that there article too. Makes ya proud to be an englishman, arrr! . . . although I be not English, so that don't work (curses, and I so wanted to be witty). Piracy on the high seas and on land! Where there be Englishmen, there be occupation at the business end of a musket...
