Why do we like collecting books?

I don't buy them for their monetary value either. Most books that are worth a lot of money now were considered very good writing at the time they were published. Consider the book Fahrenheit 451. Suppose you were shopping at your favorite grocery store way back when it was first...

    Books on/in/about London?

I have three of Rutherford's books that I aquired recently. "London", "Sarum", and his latest, "The Forest" . All first editions. They are historical fiction. Haven't read any of them yet.

Why do we like collecting books?

Hmmm... As I have said I like hardbacks. It sure would be nice to know if a book is going to win a literary prize or something up front :) ! Some of these first editions can become quite valuable. Are there any super book scholars in this forum that can tell us to "Buy that one, it will be...

how well do you preserve your books?

I have books all over the place too. I need to get more bookshelves. I am trying to place them all in a database, and so there are stacks waiting to be entered. I could be doing that now, but I am enjoying reading how other people are dealing with their stacks of books too :) !

Why do we like collecting books?

The thread that has a vote on how many books you own, prompted me to ask why DO we like to collect so many books? One of the posts said that they buy 10 books a month! I know you can't be reading all of them. So there must be something deeper. For me, I like older used books the best. I...

Good books about the history of Rome.

I am interested in the beginnings of the Roman Empire. I have subscribed to Easton Press' 100 Greatest Books series. One of them is "The Early History of Rome" by Livy. I haven't received it yet, and will have to wait for it :) There are some older writings by Arthur Gilman that I would...

    How much is too much?

I agree with Ashlea. I have purchased several antique hardbacks from ebay at good prices even with shipping. Since I like hardbacks, I can find even recent novels at a good price. We only have one used book store here in Toledo, Ohio, and he gets a lot of his books to sell in the store on...

    Hardback or paperback?

Hardback definitely. I have a lot of antique books which I think are great. I have some books from the 1890's. They are in pretty good shape considering they are over 100 years old. Your paperback will be long disintegreated in 100 years. I think it is great to leave good books around...

    Victor Hugo

Thanks for the Hugo website! I have recently become interested in his work. I am currently reading The Laughing Man (The Man Who Laughs). It is one of those pocketbooks from around 1900 that is not in very good shape. I am really enjoying the book. I am looking for a better hardback antique...

    Confessions of a book sniffer

I really don't like to read paperbacks, but the few that I have always have a stronger scent than hardbacks. Probably cheaper paper and ink! Go to the library sometime and pick out the older cloth covered books. Sniffers heaven! (my name was change to protect my innocence) --Mack

    Book Club Recommendations

Oh yuck! You are right! As a man, I can't stand books that have a strong plot, three dimensional characters, that are well written, and explore basic human truths. (just kidding) :D --Tim

    Helen Fielding: Bridget Jones's Diary

I just ordered a used copy of this book. I hope I like it. When Ashlea said Colin Firth (Darcy) of Pride and Prejudice what popped into my mind was the way the "proper English" said his name: "Mista Dahcee" :) --Tim

    hello people

Hi Nelka. As far as fantasy, I have read two of R.A. Salvatore's trilogy: The Demon Awakens, and The Demon Spirit. I have the Demon Apostle but have not started it yet. I have really enjoyed the storyline. Just thought I would suggest them if you want to try some more fantasy. --Tim

    I just arrived

Oooh tangential. A very stylish word indeed! (OK, yeah I looked it up). Well as far as my age, I am 46. That means that I was in the turbulent '60's in elementary school and graduated high school in 1975. There was probably a lot of psychological whooey at that time in the public school...

    I just arrived

OK, I had to look up ephemera. For all of you who were wondering also: "Printed matter of passing interest". I guess you could rephrase it "All things Robinson Crusoe"! (Great website title don't ya think?). Anyway, I have never read R.C., but I will be getting it as part of my Easton Press...
