    Looking for good books for my 13 year old

    I think she would like the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It has some fantasy aspects because it deals with Greek gods/goddesses but it has some great characters, well-done but not dumb romance, and it is fast paced. The Harry Potter series also does "young person romance" really well...

    Robert McCammon is great. Start with Swan Song, Blue World, They Thirst or Mine. Also Dan Simmons...Try Summer of Night. The Terror was interesting.

    Books based on isolation/solitude

    I immediately thought of Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, although it isn't exactly what you're looking for. Also, they're YA books and old ones at that, but I loved My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, and The Island Keeper by Harry Mazer.
