Actually the spartans did most of their fighting on land,sparta did not have much of a navy,if any.Athens was the big naval power at the time and between the spartan army and the athenian navy,with the help of other greek city states,they defeated the persian invading force.
I read on the couch,bed and also at my favorite watering hole,I will sit at a table order a pint of Keiths and more often than not some woman will ask me what i'm reading.That's how I met my current girlfriend.
I have read a few of his books and I must say that I found most of them very predictable,specialy The Pelican Brief and The Firm, the only one I liked was A Time to Kill.I prefer Scott Turow.

A.A. Attanasio's The Dragon and the Unicorn , The Eagle and the Sword and of course Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave,The Hollow Hills,The last Enchantment and The Wicked Day.Finally Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur,that's the book that most influenced the movie Excalibur.
I find that I'm using the library more often, because of the high price of books but I also look at the classified pages in the paper for estate sales,most of them include books and if you show up early you can get some good selections at very cheap prices.
I just finished book three of Jordan's Wheel of Time series and I need a break
from Sci-Fi and Fantasy so I started reading an old Perry Mason book and I may also tackle the Count of Montecristo.
