    I have read some good ones by Ellery Queen and I also enjoyed Perry Mason books where the parlour scene is substituted by a courtroom scene.

    John Grisham

    I have read a few of his books and I must say that I found most of them very predictable,specialy The Pelican Brief and The Firm, the only one I liked was A Time to Kill.I prefer Scott Turow.

    The Barbarian Invasions of the Roman Empire by Thomas Hodgkin although at seven volumes it's a lengthy read.

    King Arthur type books?

    A.A. Attanasio's The Dragon and the Unicorn , The Eagle and the Sword and of course Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave,The Hollow Hills,The last Enchantment and The Wicked Day.Finally Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur,that's the book that most influenced the movie Excalibur.

    Can someone recommend a good epic?

    you should try Michael moorcock's tale of the Eternal Champion which includes several series; Elric of Melnibone,Corum,Hawkmoon and Count Brass.

    How much is too much?

    I find that I'm using the library more often, because of the high price of books but I also look at the classified pages in the paper for estate sales,most of them include books and if you show up early you can get some good selections at very cheap prices.

    try the Alianist by Caleb Carr it takes place in the late 1800's and describes the beginings of profiling.
