The Lazarus Post
Thank you for reviving this post.
I have had "The Glass Bead Game" reccomended to me several times. I promise to read it someday soon.
I haven't read "Hangover Square." I'll check that out too.
But I have read "The Trial," and I agree that it shares a lot in common...
Neuromancer trilogy
I'm pretty sure you are right about the names of the three books, Funes, and also about them not really being a tight trilogy.
Case has a part in all three books and they share some of the same themes, but you could enjoy them independently.
I didn't read them in order...
Sirius - Olaf Stapeldon
Great novel from the 1930s or 40s about a super-smart dog and his romantic crush on his master's daughter. Very strange. Bought it blind at a flea market. I've since learned he was a pretty influential sci fi writer.
Carlos,
You don't have to convince me that the Maoist review was BS, I just thought it was interesting to see what different readers bring to the table.
It's crazy how different people's interpretations of books can be.
The only time I really discussed books with others in any in depth...
I am not a maoist.
But here is a review of the Dune movies I found on the maoist international movement web-site.

I'm linking to it because I think it has relevance to some of my comments in this thread.
I live in Pennsylvania where all wine and booze is sold by the state, so the whiskey selection can be limited.
But PA is trying to branch out and improve their selection, especially of wines and high-end liquors.
They now publish a glossy magazine and distribute it for free at liquor...
Howdy, Folks!
I work for a newspaper and we were sent a promotionial copy of a book of short stories called "The Whistle Pig" by Duck Miller.
It's a literary puzzle, and the book starts with a description of "The Hunt" for "an unmistakable key" somewhere within the borders of the United...
Well, David18117, I certainly understand your dislike for alien fiction. I'm not crazy about the bulk of it. I especially hate when authors get heavy-handed with created languages, someone called the phenomenon, "calling a rabbit a smeerp." But my distaste stems mostly from poor writing, or lack...
1984 is one of the most important books ever.
Along with Brave New World, it is good evidence that sci fi is the relevent and important.
I am surprised how many who have read and enjoyed 1984 claim they don't enjoy science fiction. What do they think science fiction is?
I would buy that copy Bateman, if I were you. It sounds good from the reader reviews. In fact, I may buy myself a copy at that price.
The softened versions I referred to are usually marked as children's versions and are abridged. I just happened to pick up a volume of Grimm's Fairy Tales at a...
The Brothers Grimm.
And make sure you don't buy a modernized version that softens the stories, or a version for 'young readers' that censors all the good stuff.
One of my favorite books of all time was a volume of The Brothers Grimm fairy tales. I discovered it in the attic when I was...
Lord of the Rings, The Great Gatsby and Steppenwolf
I had read LOTR twice before I heard the movies come out, and since I have reread them twice. Maybe I'll make a point of reading them annually, like Christopher Lee claimed in an interview.
Maybe I'll read them to my kids some day.
And...
Kaz, if you liked The Others and The Sixth Sense, you should see The Devil's Backbone.
It's in Spanish, so you can find it with English subtitles easily.
It's about boys in a haunted orphanage during the Spanish Civil War. There is a ghost, but there are other secrets haunting the school...
I don't care much for the BG either, but isn't it interesting that having a BG bride is seen as such a prize, when really, letting a BG witch marry into your family give the BG an opportunity to subvert your authority and serve their own agenda?
I suppose my emotional reaction to the way Idun...
Well, everyone should see all of David Lynch's movies.
Some are more accessible than others.
Mulholland Drive is not like Memento, where each piece of the film fits together in a perfect puzzle.
It stimulates that part of the mind that likes to solve mysteries and put puzzles together...
Idun, lies, Ell,
I'm surprised at your reactions to the Fremen because they are so different from mine. As I read Dune, I saw the Fremen as heroic. They were strong and tough, but wise, too.
I wonder if when you watched Zulu Dawn or Shaka Zulu, you thought the same of the Zulu people...
American Pastoral by Philip Roth
He's a great writer. His prose is so aggresive, violent even. What style. What finesse.
This is the third book of his I've read, and I haven't been disappointed yet.
