    Dan Brown

In the Robert Langdon timeline, Angels and Demons comes before the Da Vinci Code, but you don't miss anything by not reading them in the right order. Like most people I started on Da Vinci too and then went through the back catalogue. Chrondules!

i want to speed my reading

I can read quickly if necessary, but I find it reduces the enjoyment. I find I prefer it when I read at a narrator's pace, so rather than just processing the words on the page I am listening to the narrator in my head :)

    Books by Richard Matheson...

I read the whole of I Am Legend in one sitting, it's excellent. But eat some chocolate afterwards to offset the depression :p

Susanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

(Also posted in my own forum but I thought I'd mention this here too) I noticed on Guardian Books that Newline (makers of the LOTR films) have purchased the movie rights to Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. This is all well and good, but the thing that irked me was that the article referred to...

    Reading in October

Just finished part 1 of Jonathan Strange and it is very good indeed, so much so that I am neglecting my responsibilities in life just to read it. And Cathy, after you read Deception Point, you're going to hate the word "chrondules", just to warn you :p

Susanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

I get my books wholesale, so I picked the ISBN off Amazon for what should have been the white one, and the black one arrived this week - not that I'm complaining, it looks very sleek (especially like the black inking of the edges of the pages). I can't wait to start it as soon as I get done...

Stay alert! Trust no-one! Keep your laser handy!

This was my favourite RPG when I was a wee nipper! I can't believe they've re-released it! Remember Teena-O-MLY?

    Richard Matheson: I Am Legend

Exactly what I thought - and then it knocks your bloody socks off doesn't it? Excellent book, read it in one sitting in about 3 hours, I just couldn't put it down.

Books you wish you'd never bought in the first place!

The Gunslinger by Stephen King. Gratuitous and pointless. (Although plenty of people disagree with me on this - the Dark Tower series has a huge following.)

What is the Scariest Horror fiction you've ever read???

I Am Legend is pretty disturbing.

Esoteric Authors: Do they serve a purpose?

You're implying (in your devil's advocate role) that any literature should be written within specific confines so that it is easily digestible by the majority of people. Why I personally have no time right now for over-complicated authors (I'm sorry Gene Wolfe, I tried), I'm not bemoaning their...

    What Type of Book?

I loved the Fighting Fantasy books as a kid by Steve Jackson (later of GURPS fame) and Ian Livingstone, although I kept putting my pencil through the page whenever I had to adjust my strenght or stamina score. They were re-released last year as a box set...

Book Discussion - Shadow of the Torturer

Hate to admit this, but I got about 300 pages into it and gave up. Yes, I know it's supposedly the second best fantasy epic ever written, and yes, I know Wolfe is all about symbolism and hidden meaning. What I'm saying is, I think if I had more spare time I probably would have enjoyed it but I'm...

J.D. Salinger: The Catcher In The Rye

See the film "The Good Girl" for an example of this. It is strange though, especially considering the ending of the book is actually pretty positive.

What reviews/reviewers do you trust, if any?

To guage the viewpoint of a specific reviewer, find a book that you feel strongly about (positively or negatively) and see if that reviewer feels the same way as you about it. People seem to have vastly different tastes in reading - you only have to look at the Tolkein fan club or the Harry...

    Science Fiction

I should be able to let you know in a month or so... "The Stars my Destination" is number 5 in the Millenium SF Masterworks series which I'm working my way through :-)

    Science Fiction

Different strokes for different folks :-) Do you read much SF in general wabbit? I think you'd have to be into the genre to enjoy The Forever War, as the main plot vehicle (the interstellar jumps) is the sci-fi bit.
