Susanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell Has anyone else read this book? I just finished it yesterday. I thought the first half of it was pretty slow but towards the end it got better. I liked the writing style a lot--the old-fashioned writing style. I thought the characters were fun but not very...

Most Often Used References--books and sites

I love the Chicago Manual of Style. It has the answer to everything. Also Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage. It's so much fun--you can look up common phrases and get an opinion on their usage--and also the reason behind the opinion. I also think that every writer should read...

    What to read? :(

There's also The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi, where a girl passenger joins the mutinous crew of a ship against the evil captain. I loved this book as a teenager and I still love it! It's very exciting.

    Draw A Pig

The same pig I learned how to draw in 3rd grade. The only kind of pig I know how to draw. I can't draw.

    Cheap Books

Where do you get books for cheap? I get mine from: library sales yard sales eBay (if you buy in lots it's usually cheaper) bookstore sales (not nearly as good as library sales but my university bookstore used to sell discontinued text books for 10% of the original cost--pretty good, and I...

    American novel recommendation

I'm a big fan of Sinclair Lewis. He took people (not real people) and wrote novels about them, exposing the foibles of them and their classes. My favorites are Main Street (small town / housewife), Arrowsmith (doctor), and Elmer Gantry (preacher). I think Arrowsmith is my favorite. I think that...

    Most Disappointing Authors?

Great Expectations. I know, it's a classic, and it's Dickens, but my goodness, I've started it about five times and still haven't ever made it even halfway through. The plot's mildly interesting, but it's so slow!

    Susan Hill: Mrs de Winter

I have issues with sequels too. They're usually great when they're by the same author, but when someone else steps in . . . it's the worst when they try to be the author they're imitating. I remember a particularly horrible book, Excessively Diverted, that was supposed to be a sequel to Pride...

    Funny book?

I'm quite fond of The Twits by Roald Dahl. It's not very long, but it's hilarious.

    Mozart historical fiction?

Does anyone know of any historical fiction books on Mozart--adult, young adult, or juvenile?

    Wacky/Quirky Author Facts

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn: a novel where he progressively uses fewer and fewer letters until he is only left with five. Amazing word acrobatics and fun book too. Eunoia by Christian Bok: hard to place a genre on this one--probably poetry although it doesn't look like it. Each chapter is...

    Napoleon Dynamite

Anyone seen it? What did you think? I thought it was dumb and amusing at the same time . . . somehow, I liked it even though I felt like it was a waste of time. Very different.

    L.M. Montgomery

Thanks for the recommendations, Word Addict. I'll add them to my to-read list.

    L.M. Montgomery

Clementine is right. There are eight. They take Anne through childhood, school, college, university, work, marriage, and children. I actually grew with Anne. I was only interested in the first book when I was a child. When I went to college, I was very interested in the second and third books...

    Sci-Fi in Schools?

I also read 1984, Brave New World in high school. There were also other options on our reading lists. At university, I took a whole class on sci-fi and fantasy. It was fun. College is fun because you have more choice over what classes you want to take. I took Jane Austen instead of Shakepeare. I...

    L.M. Montgomery

I've never found anything quite like Montgomery, but here are some of my favorite books that have elements in common with her stories: Cheaper by the Dozen and Belles on Their Toes by Frank Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. The true story of a family with twelve children. It's...

    L.M. Montgomery

Yes! My favorite memory of that book is when my grandfather came to visit us once, he was so bored that he picked up this book, which was lying around, and read all of it! He started on Emily of New Moon next, but looked so miserable that my mom took mercy on him and found something else for...
