    the lies of locke lamora

My wife put it down at page 75 and I put it down at 50... nothing happened.. too much description of things I don't care about and a cliched thief... BORING.

Do you like "journey" or "no conflict" stories?

Lately I have come to the realization that I do not like stories where someone starts on a long journey and pages go by describing their long journey, then something happens, they deal with it, and continue on the long journey... I have also come accross stories where the setting is sci/fi...

Do you read books in a series consecutively or take breaks?

I am wondering. Do most people here read an entire series in order or do you read other books in between volumes?

    Need new sci fi/fantasy recommendations!

Well, Left Hand of Darkness was all round great. I then went and tried Crystal Singer and stopped around page 130.. it suffered from the same problem of The Rowan... nothing interesting ever happened! Think I'm gonna try Watership Down next while awaiting new books in the mail..

    Need new sci fi/fantasy recommendations!

I've heard some good things about Guy Gavriel Kay, but when I read amazon reviews, it seemed like his stories were semi based in real life history.. is that not the case?

    Need new sci fi/fantasy recommendations!

Yes, made up history, isn't history to me... I simply have trouble mixing real history with made up elements. Yes, as you see by my list and notice of the books I still have yet to read, I had quite a list .. but now that I am nearing the end of my exposure to new authors, I am now looking for...

    Need new sci fi/fantasy recommendations!

After taking a look at the rated books thread, I had to turn away in disgust... The reason being that everyone seems to give nostalgic books higher ratings... therefore it is not as accurate as the way I did it, where I rated them fresh from reading and balanced the scale accordingly to...

"Ilium- Unreadable I'm curious - why isn't this readable? I have this in my TBR pile. It mixes Greek Mythology, my favourite subject, with scifi." I seem not to like history at all in my fantasy/sci fi books...Plus, I am not a fan of anything Greek. My best friend, which is a classics...

    Need new sci fi/fantasy recommendations!

I just finished the Rowan, which was, unfortunately, only average to me... I'm running out of new sci fi/fantasy books with new authors to try.. here is my list of readings in the last 2 years with 5 being the rest. Keep in mind that I still have and WILL BE reading the rest of Bujold's books...

Need new suggestions... here's what I've read...

What worries me about Prince of Nothing is your mention of his philosphical/religious views throughout his book. As Stranger in a Strange Land has brought to my attention... Nothing ruins a story for me more than when an author uses characters to simply preach his own religious/philosphical...

Need new suggestions... here's what I've read...

Good question. The end of Star Trek on tv encouraged me to expand my horizens.. so I got into the 4400, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica etc... since I was running out of tv shows to watch, I decided that some Deep Space Nine books would be the way to go next... At this point in my life I had...

Aye, the star trek books do this.. which is why I have them on indefinite hold for now... As for Pern, I own only the books until 1990... Just looking for the best out there.

Need new suggestions... here's what I've read...

Oh, and I've gotten plenty more Star Trek books.. but I am looking to expand my sci fi/fantasy author exposure... For example, I own all of discworld, vorkosigan, fire and ice, Dragonriders of Pern etc... I will get to them, but I also want to be exposed to some other fantastic authors if they...
