I'd say Perks of being a Wallflower has been the worst book i started this year. I only made it about 30 pages in and it was just so unoriginal and annoying that i had to stop. I can understand that the style is similar to Catcher in the Rye, just with the narration by a young man, but at least...
the problem with the movie is that it leaves out the last chapter, and the last chapter makes the entire thing make sense. It changes everything about the rest of the book: while the debate about free will vs. 'the greater good's safety' remains intact but the perspective changes. book wins...
The Stand by Stephen King: liked it but it's still second to the Tailsman as far as the his works i've gotten to read
Life of Pi : it was good but not life altering or anything like that
Perks of Being a Wallflower: couldn't get into this book. it was a bit too immature for me and tried to...
I don't know if this would fit what you're looking for but The Screwtape letters by C. S. Lewis is an interesting look on hell and the ways people could end up there. it's also a quick read (a little over 180 pages if i remember correctly).
Moby Dick : i know it's a classic and an epic but by the time i finished reading that novel i didn't want to read a classic again. of course, i have read classics since but i had a lasting bitter taste for the book. If i had to describe what i didn't like it would have to be the constant...
my favorite is a tie between "the magician's nephew" and "the horse and his boy"...which is annoying because as the last two of the series written they won't be made into movies for a very long time and will be the first ones cut if the films don't do well. In "magician's nephew" i really loved...

Atonement. i got into the book so much that when i finished it I had no idea what i wanted to read next because everything seemed to be dull in comparison
it use to take me forever to finish a book. it took me about three months to finish War and Peace and smaller books still took me around a month but because i have a job where i can sit and read for six hours straight I can finish a 400 page book in a day.
agreed. The Master and Margarita is one of those really unusual books that stays with you. not because you can relate to it but because there is so much interesting stuff happening throughout.
it's a short story but i would also suggest The Overcoat by Gogol.
I agree. I've never felt my world view expanding more than this book. I have been able to apply so many things from Brothers Karamazov to the way others around me act and the way I want to live my life.
also:
To Kill A Mockingbird : I saw the movie when I was very young but the subplots...
