April 2011: Bill Bryson: Shakespeare: The World As Stage

I enjoyed Shakespeare: The World As Stage but...

thought Bryson's decision to stick purely with actual Shakespeare documentation rather than hearsay (as so many of the previous Shakespeare biographies have) was a brave one. However, as a result of the minimal documentation available, the book suffered from any real continuity and Bryson inevitably still had to hypothesize in order to connect the limited information that he had.

I wonder if he felt that he bit off more than he could chew but then was too proud to ditch the project. He did take the opportunity to disrespect some of the previous biographers for their fantasized versions of events.
