Authors who use high level vocabulary

I am a student who loves to read and needs to build my vocabulary for a standarized test. I would like to combine both so I can learn words while doing something I like.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. Thanks in advance.

Some little voice in the back of my mind is whispering: "Umberto Eco".

I just checked out the first page of The Name of the Rose and found a couple of words I didn't know.

I'd also recommend Eco's works - I've almost finished Foucault's Pendulum and I wouldn't say it's an easy read.

My brother is a big fan of Patrick O'Brien, who apparently has quite a word hoard. Brother is a classicist, knows Latin and Greek, and reads a lot of history. He maintains that O'Brien was a first-rate linguist. So, if you're into the seafaring yarns, you might enjoy him more than Eco (who, BTW, is translated from the Italian by William Weaver, in close consultation with Eco).
