Construction of your personal library?

My DH and I recently moved into a new house and have dedicated a room as a library. It has several shelves - all overflowing - and piles of books on the floor. I do try to organize them, at least by putting books by the same author together. And I have my bookshelf of favorites. My bookshelves do not match, but eventually I hope to have a matching set surrounding the room (my parents have done this and it's great). I also will have a place set up in the center as a homework center for our future kid.

I will never have my dream library of a huge room surrounded with bookshelves and comfy seats in the middle. We just can't afford a house big enough for my library dreams, but I am happy with what I've got.

I have a kind of study-meets-library with custom-made bookshelves that have been overflowing ever since. My unread books are sitting in a landscape of untidy stacks along the wall, and there are growing mountains of books I've read because I have a certain system of order on my shelves and don't want to shift everything every time I've finished a book ;D

When my sister came visiting a while ago, she said something along the lines of "that room is so YOU - books and chaos" :D

i have a smallish room filled floor to ceiling.. the books are mostly in bookcases that line the walls, the shelves of which are mostly all double stacked, with more books stacked on top, and even more books stacked on top of each other, spines facing outward as if they were on a shelf, stacked between bookcases too.. i have so many treasures in there.. some older books, one over a hundred years old now! some signed books here and there. problem is my eyes are failing me, and i would much rather read from the iPad now.

Send me you unwanted SciFi. :whistling:

Now then I have been improving in this department...before the wife up and shoots me. I added some bookshelves to the hall. In the midst of the clearing the old shelves I realized there were many books just gathering dust. I began going unit by unit...maybe eight individual shelving areas all together. I divided them into keep/donate to the library used books/leave a box of relevant titles for co-workers/resell to a local bookshop. By culling the dusties, I now have room for more! If I may add a link-you may have seen it already-it's not what you think...it's truly amazing...http://bookshelfporn.com/ (links to a photoblog of bookshelves - mod check on link! ;))

I can't imagine actually parting company with books. You are being very brave. I don't even get rid of the one's I gave up on reading.

It was excellent timing actually...book sale coming up at one of the biggest libraries in the area...counting the days

I have books like that of my Mum's, cat fiction, that has to be a genre. I've had them at least thirty years and maybe glanced at them...but those I will always have.

I don't believe in locking book away like they are dangerous beasts:

Ok books do contain ideas and ideas can be dangerous, but still books need to be read.

Love this...
