"Dumbledore Is Gay" says Rowling

The question you should ask yourself is why is it important for you if she says Dumbledore is gay or not? Are you surprised/shocked that gay people exist? It should not even be seen as newsworthy.

It is not a question of if Dumbledore is gay or not, and so what if he is,
it does not, for me anyway, detract from who he was in the story.
My question was what was Rowlings point. For what ever reason she has, she stirred something up. The Harry Potter Saga was over. Everyone more or less moved on, except probably the truly die hards and fan-atics. Which I am neither. I enjoyed the journey, but was glad to see it end.
I was just wondering what she what she thinking when she made this announcement after all was presumably said and done.

Whatever she chooses to say at this point..in my mind, and that of my kids..Dumbledore is not gay...or even overtly hetrosexual. If she meant to portray him as a gay man, she did a poor job. He did not come across that way to us. In fact, we did not need to worry about his sexuality at all. What we were drawn to was the strength of character within his soul. She can say what she wants now..for us, we've already fixed this character in our minds the way we see him. Right or wrong.

Again, if his sexuality doesn't impact the story one way or another, why does it matter if he's gay or straight? It's not a matter of gay porn, after all.

I thought Neil Gaiman's thoughts on it were pretty spot on.

I have to agree with you both, and in a way, thats part of what I was trying to say. She made a lovable character, whose sexuality was never a part of the picture, so what she says now really doesn't impact how we( my family and I) view that character or the entire series.

That depends on if the author wants to make a feminine "hello i'm the gay man in this story" character, or not. Neil Gaiman said it better than i can.

Why is there any need to define a characters sexual preferences after 7 volumes of work have not adequately defined it already?

Why not leave it ambiguous as that's clearly what was done in the books?

At least there are a few hetero's in the story.

It's not like she held a press conference to make the announcement. She was asked a question at a book signing, and answered it the way she saw fit.

I agree.

And, I still think that unless it says so in the book, the most we can do is speculate. Even if Rowling says something, she has to publish a new book to confirm it in my opinion. Text is final.

Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, she saw the script carried a reference to a girl who was once of interest to Dumbledore.

She said she ensured director David Yates was made aware of the truth about her character.

-BBC News - JK Rowling outs Dumbledore as gay

Sources close to Rowling have leaked that her next “character outing” will expose a (yet un-named) child as having bi-racial, multi-cultural parents of direct African and Hispanic decent who were joined in an arranged marriage at the age of eight.

This minority-skinned child will have spent the first years of his/her life being raised in either a Middle Eastern Islamic community, or perhaps an eastern Hindu/Buddhist community before coming to Hogwarts.

Rowling is not quite ready to commit to whether this admission will “out” a male or female character, but she’s quite sure this character will have at least one addiction to either alcohol, cocaine, or perhaps he/she will be borderline morbid-obese thanks to an addiction to television talk shows, video games, and Cool Ranch Doritos dipped in Vegemite. The child will most certainly have a pronounced stutter, acne, and be left-handed.

Rowling supposedly flirted with the idea of a hermaphrodite outing, but decided “those people” wouldn’t pad her bank accounts enough to justify the time needed to brainstorm why this is just now coming to light, or how it came to light.

In essence it appears Rowling is on a mission to capture the hearts of as many minority marketing niches as possible, with one single character, while simultaneously having no direct or in-direct effect on any of the main characters, plot lines, sub-plots, movies, or potential merchandise which may appear should Rowling wish to capitalize further on Potter mania within the next few years.

I wish I could provide the source link to this, but.....as the main stream media likes to print.....it came from "experts".

"He is my character. He is what he is and I have the right to say what I say about him..."

Speaking yesterday at a news conference in Toronto.

I believe the question was if he had ever found love? Basically, if she's written about Dumbledore believing he was gay she can either skirt the issue or tell the truth. if she's written the entire series believing he was straight and had answered to that effect no one would care.
The fact that the media is going nuts is just further evidence of the homophobia is our society.

The hermaphrodite article is just for fun, but yes, it appears that although she is finished with the books she wants to continue living in Harry fantasy land and weaving whatever she wants. I think the fame and money and mania went to her head.

Oh yeah, and I've never read any of the books, and apparently won't. This after-the-fact stuff seems classless.

Who cares? Harry Potter was a fun series (Well, no; last one sucked, sorry :( ), and if Dumbledore was gay, all the power to him. And like, holy crap-Jesus, I usually stay in tune with the news, but this made CNN FRONT PAGE?. That is sad and stupid on so many levels.

As for Rowling herself, she had the right to say what she said; she's a writer, and it's a writers job to be creative. Doing what she did (and spawning this), just hits home her need to be creative even further.

And again relating to Rowling, someone said "the media///blah has gone to her head." I agree. When she started pissing and moaning to the press that someone leaked her book, I wanted to find a microphone and cuss her out to no man's end. To be such a control freak is pathetic. That was entirely irrelevant, but I thought I'd just throw it out there; like Harry Potter, think Rowling is an idiot. Mmm.

I can't believe how much press this has gotten. Since Dumbledore is an old man throughout the entire series, and there is much about his life that wasn't completely revealed, why would we expect to even know his sexual orientation? Ron's twin brothers never seem to have girlfriends, either. Neither does Sirius Black, although we do know about the posters in his bedroom, I suppose. I don't care. Hopefully, no one does.
