Favorite Young adult authors

My favorite author from childhood would have to be Roald Dahl. I dont know why though. I've never been drawn to read any of his besides Matilda, The BFG, and Esio Trot (which I read recently).
I also really love Loius Sachar. He is so great. I love There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom and Sideways stories from Wayside school (I like Maurecia-flavored ice cream the best too)!

Janet Lunn, Kit Pearson (both excellent Canadian authors 
and have wonderful books), Ann M. Martin (read "The Babysitters Club"), Katherine Paterson (loved "Jacob Have I Loved"), Philip Pullman (loved the Ruby in the Smoke trilogy), and many more. I was in love with my local public library and by the time I was in grade seven, I was signing out classics like "Last of the Mohicans" (never read it) and stuff by V.C. Andrews.

Enid Blyton, C.S. Lewis, L.M. Montgomery, Capt. W.E. Johns, Susan Cooper's 'The Dark Is Rising' sequence, I wasn't aware of 'King Of Shadows', thanks Deerskin, I will keep my eyes peeled for that!
I am now 34 & have discovered JK Rowling, John Marsden's Tomorrow series, LOVE Garth Nix Mr Monday series so far, am eagerly awaiting Friday's book next year....
I didn't discover Roald Dahl 'til I was older.....but I do love him now.

I am uncertain what is understood here as Young Adult literature. A young adult is not a 13 yr old and this misnomer (cheerfully perpetuated by the publishing industry) skews the view of what is Young Adult writing. A young adult is possibly 16+ yrs old, and what I consider a Young Adult read should be far more than a book for 13 yr olds, far more demanding than JK Rowling and not necessarily a fantasy cross-over title either.
There are very few books that make the grade - SE Hinton, the Pullmans and David Almond (though not all of them either), Holly Black's Tithe. The question that makes distinct what is a Young Adult book should be "What book would you give to a 16+ yr old that they couldn't have read/understood at an earlier age?" Aidan Chambers' books, and two or three of the Jan Mark novels, and books by Sonya Hartnett.

Many of my faves have also been mentioned (Blyton, Dahl, Marsden)
I'd like to add Graeme Base, whose books captivated my brothers and I from when we were very little until...well, I'm still captivated frankly! The Eleventh Hour is an excellent way to get kids to sit still for a while (never did find all those mice!)
Also, I forget the author's name, but I enjoyed the "Babysitter's Little Sister" series until I was about 9 or 10, then moved onto the "Babysitters' Club" series. I credit these books, along with "Green Eggs and Ham" with my fascination with books.

Definitely Cornelia Funke and Anthony Horowitz. I also really like Philip Pullman, Michael Morpurgo and Kate Thompson. I recently read John Boynes "Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" and will be looking for some of his "older" adult stuff!

Some other greats are "Are you there God, It's Me Margaret", "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing", "Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great", and "Blubber", all by Judy Blume. She is great for kids.
