Favourite Fantasy Authors

Mine are:

1. George RR Martin (nothing else to say that hasn't been said already)
2. Guy Gavriel Kay (If you're a fantasy fan, you owe it to yourself to read this)
3. Ursula Le Guin (one word: Earthsea.)
4. Neil Gaiman (Accomplished and skilful)
5. Oh, alright, it's Frank Herbert. (one word: Dune)

I'll say this bit about Robert Jordan - he was *brilliant* for the first 3 or 4 books. He really was. I still think the names of the Forsaken is still one of the coolest set of names anywhere. :D I'll agree that it got bloody tiring. I'm behind about 3 books, and not in hurry to complete my collection.

Top 5 is tough and limiting but here we go:

In History:

Mervyn Peake
JRR Tolkien
Fritz Leiber
HP Lovecraft
Roger Zelazny

Current:

China Mieville
Michael Moorcock
M. John Harrison
Jeff VandeMeer
George R.R. Martin (tie) Gene Wolfe

Really tough for just 5, I can think of 30-40 that are interchangeable but that will do.

My top 5 in fantasy are:

1] James Clemens

2] Steven Erikson & Ian Cameron Esslemont

3] R. Scott Bakker

4] David Gemmell

5] Robert Newcomb

And honourable mentions go to L Frank Baum[ wizard of Oz series] & J.K. Rowling

Larry Niven, Larry Niven and Larry Niven. He's brill.... I just finished reading Ringworld's Children. Awesome book, but probably not as good as his earlier stuff.

Other others I like are Dean Koontz and J. K. Rowling :D

Difficult to do a top 5, but to do so, I'll avoid all epic fantasy.

Current favourites:
1) Mervyn Peake
2) Ian R Macleod
3) China Mieville
4) Charles de Lint
5) Graham Joyce
