I'm probably totally off-base here, but I do remember reading a book years back, (a kid's book) that sounds kind of similar. It's called Alien War Games, by Martyn Godfrey.

Is the author possibly Joan D. Vinge? She has a series of books based upon a world and character that sound like what you are describing.
