genres you like to read

Prof Tolkien - *where* have you been? Goodness it's good to see you. Hope everything's well and dandy.

I do have Lonesome Dove in my TBP list, but let's just say I've not wandered close enough to the westerns as of now to get it. According to the Chinese calendar, my birthday's around the corner...

:D

Hey there, ds. Thanks for the kind words! Everything is going well and I hope the same can be said for you. I've been around off and on, just not posting much but I feel a resurgence coming on.

Given your penchant for excitement and adventure, I know LD would be right up your alley. It's as exciting and gritty a book as you could ever ask for. You should seriously consider wandering closer to it one of these days.

Kuroc - If you can let us know what areas you are interested in then people may be able to narrow down some non-fiction choices for you, it is such a broad spectrum.

Well I would like some non-fiction that deals with space for a start.
You like planets(around our sun and others stars), space probes, stars, and books that talk about how we could terraform mars.

kuroc - I got one for you - Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. It talks about planets (well, ours, to be exact). It also talks about our universe, so there's a lot of stars for you. Expect to chuckle a few times.

Terraform Mars? Another one - Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. It's fiction, but apparently someone said in the back cover that if and when anybody is ready to colonize Mars, then they should read this book. So this is almost a non-fiction too. Consider it a future manual.

I'm not too picky about genre. I like a variety and only use the genres as a way to locate whatever is interesting at the moment. Anymore, I like books that don't fit into a specific genre. About the only thing I steer way clear of is outright porn and new age stuff. I'm not too keen on true crime either, but am always open to something that happens to catch my interest. I love historical fiction and nonfiction on various historical topics, biographies and memoirs, mysteries, fantasy, and yes, the ocassional western(!)

I'll read almost anything, except romances and westerns.

Me too. I don't think I've ever picked up a western, or straight romance. I read pretty much any fiction except for those two genres. As far as non-fiction, I'll pretty much read anything science-orientated.

I will second this recommendation or 3rd or 4th it if that's the case. I will admit that I skipped a few parts that were just too dry for me (about people and not about the science) but the book was absolutely fascinating. I have always been mystified by the depths of the ocean and have little desire to see more and more space exploration with little to no results. This book was perfect for me because though it did discuss space, it really highlighted how little we know about our own planet after you get to a certain depth in our oceans.

I liked that and how he discussed just how many natural disasters that have occurred with any relative frequency over the course of the history of the universe and how each one is, in keeping with historical trends, overdue to wipe us off the planet. Morbid, but an interesting coversation starter none the less.
