I am from the USA: Toledo, Ohio to be exact, and have recently been getting more interested in books.

A month ago, I decided to turn off the TV. I was so dissappointed in the programming. I had 60-some cable channels, and most of the time couldn't find anything worthwhile to watch. I downgraded my cable to 12 channels and trimmed off $40 from my cable bill. I have to keep the cable around for my cable modem. I can't get rid of that you know! So, I am now reading the newspaper, and books.

I have been really getting interested in classics. Those books that I thought were too hard to read, or too boring. I am currently reading Moby Dick (Melville), and The Laughing Man (V. Hugo). I am finding these books fascinating. The first few pages are challenging, but you seem to get used to the prose, and the reading picks up.

I really love hardcover books. There is something "bookish" about them, more eloquent. I have subscribed to Easton Press 100 greatest books ever written, and to their First Signed Editions. I have bid and won several Franklin Library books on ebay. I really love these leather-bound books.

I like the fantasy genre also. I have read Salvatore's The Demon Awakens, The Demon Spirit, and need to get the the third in the trilogy - The Demon Apostle. And of course, who doesn't love Tolkien.

Now don't laugh, but I am really interested in reading some so-called childrens classics too. I want to read Little Men (I just got an old hardcopy), and the Anne of Green Gables series (** I knew you would laugh **). Oh well... I didn't read much as a kid, and I want to catch up!

See ya around!

Hi, and welcome!

I definitely know what you mean by the feel of hardcovers. And leather books are just magical - the weight in your hand, the wonderful smell . . .

Hi there!

I'm really glad you have discovered books :) About 4 years ago I actually got rid of my T.V completely!!!! Now, I have no T.V but there is a HUGE wooden bookshelf that is filled with books! I'm running out of space :)

If you are into reading classics and children's lit, might I suggest "The Chronicles of Narnia"? They are wonderful books and I am sure you would love them a lot :) The writer was a very close friend of Tolkien :)

Best Regards,
Wabbit

Yes you may suggest The Chronicles. I had forgotten about them! Easton Press makes a lovely leather edition of them too. Thanks!

Hi Tim & welcome from one "newbie" to another. You're right, Toledo is just a stone throw away from The Fort. It's been a few years but I've been there many times. Hope you enjoy your stay here as much as I have so far. And BTW, I'm jealous of your collection all ready!

Hey Tim (or would you prefer Trames?) :)

Well, i only have 5 channels on TV (no cable at all!!) and i find that most of the time there is nothing to watch on them either!!

Glad you've made the escape into books (although i cant promise its better on the eyes, it can have the added bonus of being combined with going to the toilet :D)

Anyhows, Welcome to the Forums!!

Phil

Welcome to these here humble Boards, Tim!

I know what you mean, regarding hardback! They're just great, aren't they. Downside is, I read a lot on the bus, to and from college, and sometimes a hardback edition is just too much to lug around. So, I have to resort to paperbacks quite often. :(

Welcome again, and don't be a stranger!

Cheers, Martin :D

Hi Tim, welcome to this forum. Same with me as I enjoyed to read children's book. You will enjoy Anne of Green Gables that I have read years ago. Enjoy yourself to join in and have a chat with us!!

Yes, the film is based on the book. It has been many years since I have seen it.

--OOOPS, sorry, this was supposed to go under the Robinson Crusoe thread
