Horrible characters

I truly disliked the character of Cristopher Banks in 'When We Were Orphans' by Kazuo Ishiguro, this man irritated me so much that I had to force myself to finish the book.

Oh, I need to add, everyone from The Great Gatsby. Of course, it was hard to tell what they were really like, with them being drunk all the time.

Are you saying there's a problem with being drunk all the time? Oh dear. ;)

SAME! At she almost made me want to stop reading! But it shows how good an author is when one of their characters effects you so much.

I know I'm probably alone on this one, but I found Paul Atriedes (the 'hero' from Dune - Frank Herbert) totally obnoxious. If anybody needed taking out and beating with a very large stick, it was him.

I wouldn't actually go as far as taking him out and beating him with a very large stick, but I wasn't too impressed with him either. Which is probably why it's not very likely I'll pick up the rest of the Dune books.

Simon 'Sick Boy' Williamson from Trainspotting and Porno - Probably the most selfish egotistical person ever put into print.

Prof. Umbridge for sure!! She kinda ruined Order of the Phoenix for me.

And the Mhybe in Erikson's Memories of Ice. Ugh!

Proffeser Umbridge tops my hate list without a doubt

but i personally thought that was a bad piece of writing by Rowling. i mean , she has shown her to be completely , utterly bad. she was so....you know... reeking with badness.
there were no other dimension to her character. at every point in the book the only purpose in her life seemed to be being nasty to the good kids , sucking the happiness out of their lives. come on , nobody is that horrible! trying the cruciatus curse on Harry!! who are you kidding
i think Rowling overdid it. It just left the reader with a bad taste in his mouth and with a feeling of hate

Other characters I haven't liked:
*Poirot from Christie novels. He is so arrogant that I absolutely cannot stand him. He's better than Mrs. Marple, though...

awwww. come on :) he is so sweet. the ridiculous conceited man who thinks the world cant survive without his brains:)
christie has given her books lots of humour with this concept.i agree about miss marple. she is extremely boring.
i know that such characters can be intolerable to some.but i personally dont mind them. look at garfield! the lazy wicked vain good-for-nothing ungrateful troublesome cat and i absolutely love him!!! :)

He is human, Garfield is a cat. I love cats...humans, eh. :D

It depends on the character and the way the stories are written as to whether I find them annoying or not. For instance, I think Lord Peter Wimsey is hilarious, though he is also vain. And I love Sherlock Holmes. Poriot just irritates me....not that I dislike Christie's mysteries, I just dislike her sleuth.

I think the whole book was a bit overdone with emotions...all the characters seemed to be in one state (Harry=Angry, Umbridge=Evil). I certainly did not enjoy Order of the Phoenix as well as the other books.

The romantic interest of the protagonist in "A Farewell to Arms" by Hemingway. She was such a goose without a will of her own and the requests that she made were so shallow.
Spoiler! Highlight to read: I was pleased when she died but I still couldn't stand the wallowing in sorrow by the protagonist. Why didn't he realize that he was better off without her?

I also hate Umbridge for reasons piedro already have mentioned. She didn't have a single sympathic feature in her and it was extremely obvious that you weren't supposed to like her.

Tom Bombadil

I have never been annoyed by any character more than Tom Bombadil from LOTR. Goldberry wasn't so terrible, but Tom Bombadil was awful. Everything about him annoyed me. I can't believe someone like Tolkien had such great potential to be lame.

Gwenhwyfar - Mists of Avalon. I am really enjoying this book but this character is so pathetic, selfish, closed minded and whiney that it is driving me mad. What do Arthur and Lancelot see in her? grrrrrr

Broud from Clan of the Cave Bear was an butthole! And Julia from A Voice in the Wind was the scum of humanity!

That was rather harse Walhay. :)

Anna Karenina ruined her own book...not that I don't still somewhat enjoy the writing, but definately my least favorite Tolstoy in that I hoped for her death most of the book.

Catherine and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. I found them selfish, immature and just plain aggravating. I don't know if I would have liked the novel if they had been any different (as it was, I hated it), but I couldn't get past my dislike for them enough to enjoy the story.

Golyadkin from Dostoevsky's 'The Double.' Either of 'em (if indeed there are two). One (or one side of the character) was a po-faced, babbling idiot for whom I felt no sympathy whatsoever, and the other was just a selfish bastard.

Uriah Heep
Sansa(daughter of Eddard Stark in George RR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire")

theres many more, but i forget character's names rather easily, and i'm too lazy to research the characters.

I found it almost impossible to wade my way through the Idiot because I found Prince Myshkin to be such an idiot, hence the title, I guess. I had a similar problem with Ignatius J. Reilly from Confederacy of Dunces, I found him such a revolting and pathetic character that I scarcely wanted to touch the pages he appeared on. Any yet the character Jones from the same novel is one of my favourites in all literature.
