How else except actual antiseptic cream can i help my finger :D I cut it a few days ago on a kitchen knife and it bled lots but began to heal. But now its infected and hurts a lot. There is a blister on it and its all puffy and gross. What can i do? I have no first aid stuff at all and cant be bothered going to the shop to get any lol :)

You may need to take oral antibiotics if it's infected, it can spread and become blood poisoning very fast. This happened to my husband about 4 years ago, a little cut got infected and he got very sick, very fast. I kept trying to get him to see a doctor but at first he said it was nothing, within a few days I had him in the emergancy room with the worst case of blood poisoning the doctor had ever seen.
 
You have a problem, darling.... :eek: you need some kind of anti-biotic cream, or maybe even a visit to a doctor. Your finger sounds seriously infected and without proper treatment, will only get worse. I know it is a bother to go to the shop, but it will be a bigger bother when they have to cut your finger off. :eek:
 
Yep -- you need a prescription oral antibiotic; and frankly, you need it on an emergency basis.
 
Dear god i didnt think it was that bad! Can that really happen!? I tend to just leave things be. My pal suggested hot water with salt in it..?

Depending on how squemish you are - open up the wound, drain the pus then flush with salt water. Bathe in salt water whilst the wound is open. If pus reoccurs, drain again.
 
Catalyst when i done my nurse training many yrs ago salt water was used for cuts that were infected,it was thought it was a natural healer,this is no longer the case! go to the DRS :)
 
Ah, but there is a slight difference in cutting yourself open ;) Personally it doesn't bother me in the slightest, make sure you get all the pus out though.

Salt helps prevent bacteria from growing. Antiseptics tend to keep the wound open longer.

Doesn't sound that bad! Just get some antiseptic cream onto it and it should clear up. If it doesn't then you might want to go see a doctor. Antiseptic cream will be a whole lot cheaper than an oral antibiotic later (and less painful in the long run). And you can keep it lying around the house for the next kitchen knife slip, or in case Stewart and his circumcision machine stop by.
 
ice i have never heard of antiseptics keeping a wound open,but try never to use plasters on a open wound it just makes worse and can make it wet,try tegerderm,its just like a second skin. :)
 
Apparently antiseptics keep the wound open for longer than if you use salt water and allow it to heal naturally. I was told this by a Doctor when I saw them about a 3 inch, very deep cut that I had that I had been treating myself (as we were camping at the time) They were impressed I had managed to keep the wound clean though they did berate me over not going in sooner as it required stitching (which they couldn't do by the time I bothered seeing them). I usually use a dressing and micropore as oppose to plasters - I find it works better.
 
Well im gonna soak my finger in hot water then i found some Savalon cream to put on it. i can nick a plaster from work tomorrow :D I just wanna get this gunk out of it. Cheers for the info :D
 
ice the thing with wound mangerment care is its always changing,and covers such a wide area,were specially trained nurses do wounds only and no other nursing care :) but i am glad you went and got it sorted :)
 
They didnt do anything - just told me to keep treating it as I had been since I had obviously been doing a good job. Apparently you can't put stitches in a 4 day old wound as it has already begun to heal too much.
