It's So Hard (Not A Story)

It's so hard to know when to make new paragraphs, like this sentence, when should I start the new paragraph:

His eyes lit red has he looked and Jane's face, "I know you gotta go, but just don't leave tomorrow," he said with a smile on his face. Jane hugged him, and then left for the airport without another word.

I know that sentence might not make sense, but I just made it up in two seconds, so when do I start the new paragraph? And are there any better words I can use? Here's a good list of words I know so far:

Aquward- Weird
Ooze- Slimy substance
Unison- Sound together

And maybe a couple more, but basically my vocabulary sucks!

Good news: The best (and most enjoyable) way to improve vocabulary is to read, read, read and keep reading! (And keep listening to music with smart lyrics!)

The thing about fiction paragraphs is that there is no one right way to go about it. (Writing fiction isn't like writing an essay where you're taught to start each paragraph with a topic sentence.) Different writers will have different opinions about the best way to do it, and the same writer might use different techniques for different stories. Again, my advice is to keep reading!

I sort of read, and I listen to a lot of music, well thanks for the advice.

When I was increasing my German vocabulary I used to read German newspapers and when I came across a new word I would look it up for the sake of my passive vocabulary.

Try finding a good newspaper - physical or online - and read an article or two per day. Note down any words you don't know, find out what they mean, and try writing a few sentences with them.

If you want to write, you need to read a lot. You wouldn't try and build a house if you didn't have some practise at it, would you? So why would you try to write if you don't read? In order to write well, you must read.

You generally switch paragraphs when the idea changes, or when the paragraph becomes too lengthy. Oh, and don't do this. It's one of my pet peeves.
"It's fine," John said. "No, really, I'm so very sorry," said Mary.
If a character is speaking after another character, you should always use a new paragraph. Unless it's like this.
"But, John--" Mary began as John interrupted, "It's fine, Mary."
To learn more about paragraphs, read up. I do it naturally without thinking about it and I owe it all to the books that never leave my hands. Pay attention to the way writers set up their paragraphs and apply it to your writing.

Chapters, now. Chapters are where the rubber hits the road. New chapters can begin in the middle of a sentence.

I've seen 'em do it.

Can I be wrong? Like, I mean, can you sometimes start a new paragraph and stay in the same paragraph and they'll both be right?

Um, go up in flames, like? How do you like that book, The Fuckhead and the Penisauraus (I may have the title wrong)? Please share your big thoughts.

No, my friend did that to me, and I forgot how to get rid of it.
