John Christopher: No Blade of Grass

More a psychological character study than a post apocalyptic thriller, this one tells the story of one man and his family as they try to get out of London and make it to his brother's farm in northern England, after a virus wipes out all the grass/grain in the world. Society collapses into anarchy and chaos and the characters have to make hard decisions and endure horrible events to survive. Gripping and compelling, this is must reading for fans of the genre.

Originally published in England as The Death of Grass, this one is long out of print and the paperback I read was printed in the late 1960's and threatened to fall apart as I was reading it. It was also made into a movie in 1970 which I've never seen, but I've read that they took quite a few liberties with the story.
