I'm seeing Factotum next week, that's got better reviews so I'll probably be disappointed.

My favorite would be West of rome-mon chien stupide-in french,hilarious.
Then read a few of the others Ask the dust,bandini,wait until spring.
They where good but i missed the bitter sense of humour of that first one.
I remenber it was some 15 years ago and it was easier to find them in french than in english!

I've mentioned a number of times before (in this thread and elsewhere) that My Dog Stupid is IMO his best story. Try getting hold of the Dago Red collection of shorts, which have been reprinted with some others as The Wine of Youth. A number of those stories may match up to what you are looking for - in particular A Wife for Dino Rossi.
