Laurell K. Hamilton

Has anybody read A Kiss of Shadows? I read some chapters of it in the bookshop and was wondering if people think it's worth reading? Is it really complete trash or is it genuinely a decent entertaining read?

Both.

Honey, if you read three chapters of any book, and you aren't interested enough to read more, then find another book to read.

As the poster above states, Laurell K is both an entertaining author but also one who has introduced more and more trash to both series of novels - the Anita Blake books and the Merry Gentry books (of which A Kiss of Shadows is the first).

If you quite like the thought of a strong central female character, lashings of paranormal sex, and hunky male leads, then this is the story for you....

If you are more chick lit/high-brow literature, then you'll likely not enjoy.

I've enjoyed all the books so far by Laurell.

Yeah I don't know..the book seemed pretty good but to be honest the reason I didn't buy it was cause of lack of money :p But I was just wondering if it was worth getting from the library or anything. At any rate, I think I might give her a try, as I could do with something trashy and not too intellectual at the moment lol.

I know this is an old thread, but I figure posting here is better than starting a new one. I liked the first 8 Anita Blake books, but what is up with the newer ones? Anita is sleeping with about 5 guys, apparently sometimes more than one at a time, she can't keep her legs closed, and in the new book she thinks she's pregnant and doesn't know who the father is?
It might make up for it if the sex scene in book 8 hadn't been so gross. I liked the one in book 6, but the Richard/Anita one had me screaming, "Ew, gross!"
And all the sudden Anita had turned into a whiny psychopath Mary Sue with superpowers galore and too many titles to count. And Jean-Claude, who was my favorite character in the book, has been replaced with the ridiculous Micah. According to people who read further than I did, all the action scenes have been replaced with sex scenes. I can understand one or two, but Anita was supposed to be about action. She was too wonderful a character to fall this low. She went from being a vampire hunter with morals and a kick-butt attitude to a concieted prostitute.

What did you read? It's kinda hard to start in the middle of a series, but if you read the later Anita Blake books or the Merry Gentry, don't let it prevent you from reading the original ones. I pretend the series ends at book 8 usually. It keeps me happy. If I ever hear the REAL Anita is back, I'll start reading again.

When Laurell K. Hamilton started writing Danse Macabre, she said that
Anita doesn't get pregnant.
Will that stop Anita from having tons and tons of sex? If you read Laurell's blogs, you already know the answer.

I agree that the books up until Obsidian Butterfly were the best of the series. I was sorely disappointed (and that is an understatement) by the last three...four? Now, I just can't pick up the older books... :(

Someone told me she pretended the series ended at Obsidian Butterfly, but I pretend it ends at Blue Moon. I still read the old ones, but it kills me to know that characters I near-literally fell in love with are being wasted in such a manner. And although I haven't met Micah personally, I've heard stories, and I've got to say, GROSS.

BarnesandNoble.com just put up their review of the new Hamilton novel:

The Barnes & Noble Review
In this Anita Blake novel, Laurell K. Hamilton unleashes the mother of all bombshells -- the sexy necromancer and vampire executioner could be with child! But with seven supernatural studs as regular lovers, just who is the father?

After a missed period, Anita takes a home pregnancy test, and it comes up positive.
And, as usual with Anita, complications arise at the very worst of times. One of her lovers, the Master Vampire Jean-Claude, is throwing a party for a traveling dance company made up almost entirely of undead bloodsuckers -- and he has invited numerous other Master Vampires to attend. The historic occasion is the largest gathering of Master Vampires in American history and could be a pivotal event in the attempts to unite the fragmented factions. But with so many commanding supernatural beings gathered in one place, Anita's ardeur -- a supernatural sexual hunger that is always looking to be sated -- begins evolving once again, and actively seeking out the most powerful lovers…
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Laurell K. Hamilton should be profoundly touched. The genre-transcendent success of her Anita Blake novels has spawned a whole new subgenre of dark fantasy, romance, and mystery hybrids. Just as Marmee Noir is the creator of the vampiric civilization in the Anita Blake universe, Hamilton too is the very first of her kind -- and Danse Macabre is a perfect example of her continuing mastery, combining knotty supernatural plotlines with unadulterated eroticism. Cold shower advised after reading. Paul Goat Allen

I guess we can't expect any zombie-raisings or murder mysteries in this outing. And who the hell is Marmee Noir?

I have no clue who Marmee Noir is. I thought it would be interesting if Anita was pregnant, but I do not want to read something that is just a sex book. I read vampire books for vampires, not for porn. Laurell needs to get Anita back in-character. She's become a Mary Sue, and all this sex stuff is way too much. I liked the scene between Anita and Jean-Claude in the sixth book, but the later ones I couldn't stand--and there were way too many of them.

I quit reading that series part way through Narcissus in Chains I think I maybe got through 100 pages before I gave up. I didn't know what the heck was going on all they did was talk about sex, when to have it how to have it and all the rules of it or whatever like WTH happened!! I was too confused lol so I gave up. I did like all the books before that. Then it just got too weird for me!
 :(
