Maupassant

Miss.Harriet is another great story. The character of Miss. Harriet is so delicately poised, its just a breath away from being pathetic, yet we empathize with her.

Maupassant is often cynical and harsh with his characters who are socially well placed and invariably sympathetic with the underprivileged and the castoffs.

For humor, he often takes us to his rustic characters. I do not recollect the title of the story; it was about a woman being sold by her husband to his friend by volume, to determine which they dunk her in a barrel. Eureka! You get the humor!
