McCaffrey conundrum

Hey, hope you guys can help me figure something out. How does the Coelura fit in to Anna McCaffreys world of Pern, or it just a random short story?

From what I remember of reading the Coelura, I think it was a random (and not even that great) short story. I didn't see any connections to Pern at all.

Was there a plague in it? If not it probably didn't have anything to do with Pern .
