Undressing Emmanuelle : A Life Stripped Bare: Sylvia Kristel

Pensive, sad, and elegiac are words that I didn't think would apply to the autobiography of one the 70's biggest international sex symbols, yet that's how Kristel's unflinching look into the mirror comes off. She tells her story in more of a pastiche style than a day by day account. Her family, her fleeting fame, the drug and alcohol addictions, and the few loves she had are all accounted for. She covers a lot of ground in a pretty short book. Don't look for a lot of dirt or juicy details, she takes the high road as she tried to in life. Some interesting details:

-Emmanuelle Arsan hated her as the choice for Emmanuelle, she thought it should go to an Asian actress.

- she hates that almost all of her roles were dubbed.

-her one and only child is with French poet Hugo Claus

-her years long relationship with Ian McShane gets the most dirt, he introduced her to coke, they fought all the time, she miscarried his child and he didn't go to the hospital with her, instead attended a wrap party. Pretty much all of the dirt in the book is on him.

-like all actresses of the 70's, she slept with Warren Beatty

- Private Teacher was her biggest hit in the States.

The best parts of the book are when she discusses her love for her family, her mother especially. Her feelings really come through in these sections, and lends a sense of melancholia to the whole book. All in all a very good read. Look for the English hardback version, it has the great French movie poster for the cover, the one shot by Francois Giacobetti, the classic shot of Emmanuelle in the rattan chair.
