ewomack: Rate Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier please.

3.5/5 (on Amazon I gave it a 4 since they don't allow 1/2 stars)

Though I enjoyed reading it, I wouldn't call it a "great book." About a third of the way through I had to fight the urge to slam it shut forever. I was getting bored. It did pick up, but that nagging feeling continued until the end. The book did contain some interesting scenes. I would never call it terrible. But the lack of intimacy with Vermeer made the main character's "affair" with him hard to swallow or at least uninteresting. Plus, the main character is supposed to be an illiterate lower class girl living in the 17th century, but she somehow manages to spew vibrant metaphors and descriptions. The religious "themes" just sat there as well without going anywhere. I was much kinder to it on Amazon, but as time passes I'm finding the flaws harder to deal with. Ultimately, it's an okay book, not a great one. It's nothing I would take to a desert island. Regardless, everyone I know who read it loved it.
