When does creative writing become "important"?

When does creative writing go from freedom of expression to "smoking gun of future killer"? There have been many cases in the post 9/11 and Columbine USA coming down on people for things they've written - fictional or not.

Is this fair? Where is the line? Should we reign in every twisted writer because they might snap? Is this a smoking gun or do we just need to find an answer in hopes of changing a hazy future?

Should we lynch Stephen King?

Creative writing can come in handy when you have to write an email to your project manager on why after working 3 weeks on a project, you are 4 weeks behind.

First off, relax and enjoy a good cup of ai21.photobucket.com_albums_b300_scottgregory_00_coffee.jpg Second, keep in mind that our jails have yet to be filled with a significant number of MFA creative writing grad students. I'm not certain they could be imprisoned anyways, the incessant whining and complaining would be too much for the jailors to handle.:D Lastly, there are far more serious material out there that is widely available for one and all to see. The unambomber's manifesto is a great example, despite it's luddite simplicity and undergrad level sophistication.

Should we lynch Stephen King?

Don't blame me if your car takes a life of it's own, if it stalls and a menacing St. Bernard won't let you out, if there is a menacing clown behind the sewer grate; or if a girl at the prom uses her mind to bolt the doors and to get back at everyone. :D Bad things happen when one talks negatively about the King.

Isn't it scary? 1984 comes to mind as it has so many times when thinking about this country in the last few years.

Should we lynch Stephen King?
Exactly! Where does it stop? Once you open the gates to censorship the future is bleak.
