Looks like a library has found a way to lure people in- dating.:rolleyes:

Those who attend must bring a book they either love or loathe as a conversation starter, ensuring there are no uneasy silences during the series of five-minute dates.

"It's speed dating with books. It's designed to bring book lovers together," the library's project manager, Jackie Felstead, told Reuters Wednesday.

Not a bad idea, a person might find someone who doesn't have the IQ of a doorknob.
 
Actually, talking about books on a date would really appeal to me. But that can go really badly, too. Imagine...

Me: I hate Ernest Hemmingway. I had to read one of his books... *goes on and on about the evils of Hemmingway's writing for five whole minutes*

My date: *has been silent all this time* ...actually, Hemmingway is my favorite author.

Me: ...oh.

*awkward silence*

Me: *clears throat* So...what do you think of Steinbeck?

LOL-Great imaginary scene-would make a good Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan romance movie.

You could go the safe route and simply bring a book that everyone just loves. I've been out of **the scene** for quite some time now, but I have it on good authority from some happening guys like ions, Stewart, and CDA, that The Da Vinci Code is a good book to start with. eyezOnme brings a new Stephen King book and has similar results. So, go with Dan Brown or Stephen King, and you can't lose. :D :D :D :D

LOL. I've read DaVinci Code, and I'm one of those who liked it. Not on my favorite book list by any means, but it was enjoyable and kept me entertained. Perhaps that would work, unless I got someone who ranted about every single historical detail that the author got wrong. That bores me so much...I'm not planning on using it as a reference in a paper anytime soon, so I honestly don't care that the research was flawed.
 
This is a fun idea..I'll have to share this with my library ladies. They're constantly trying to think of ways to increase patronage and therefore justify their existence to the city council...
 
SFG75, are you suggesting that I'd want to spend five minutes in the company of eyez0nme? I think I;d just turn up with a copy of the Kama Sutra, say "let's see how many we can get through in five minutes." The benefit, of course, is that after the five minutes the next one comes along.

I should clarify that I didn't mean I'd turn up with the Kama Sutra and speed date eyez0nme.

Ahhh!, no, no, no, I meant to imply that you guys separately would use Dan Brown or Stephen King to find a gal. All in good jest.

I will never think ofthe Kama Sutra the same way again.:eek:

I think that's kinda selfish, what about her book?

And besides, wouldn't you (general you, not personal you) surely get tired before working your way around them all?! :eek:

But the concept itself is not too terrible an idea, actually. There could be benefits to identifying a Pratchett fan at first glance, or something.

Ah. After seeing eyez0nme and kama sutra in the same post my heart was beating rapidly and I couldn't really concentrate on the details.
I'm going to have a hard time concentrating for the rest of the day.

Oh and Stewart, skip the Wheelbarrow ;) .
 
Wait till you hit your mid 30's, it's like you're wading through Ulysess. You read'n'read'n'read but just can't quite finish the chapter. Not without motivating yourself by thinking of a new, more interesting book anyway.

Oh and Mr Impressive Bookmark (nudge nudge wink wink - I'm sorry it's like a blood disease I just cannot let any opportunity to say that pass),
I know I said that we didn't know enough about you, and the brown rice was one thing, but now you're just taking it too far! If you're trying to teach me a lesson then by god it's working!
