This is the author of 'Fight Club', a brilliant movie. Has anybody read any of his other books (Survivor, Choke, Invisible Monsters and Lullaby). I must get round to reading these books and was wondering if anybody has read them yet? Are they as good as the film Fight Club?

I've only read 'Fight Club.' My little brother lent it to me. I loved it. Worth reading whether or not you liked the film.

I am an avid reader and I'm always trying to get my younger siblings to read more (Two are in college, one is in high school).

My brothers are just devouring this guys books. They recommend Invisible Monsters highly.

I'm waiting on Survivor right now, my bro is going to lend it to me when he is done.

Check out Ellis. I didn't care much for American Psycho (a little too dark for my tastes) but Glamorama was good. Sounds like Invisible Monsters deals with similar themes.

I love this new batch of brilliant American authors. They are dealing with some great themes that are relevant to modern young men.
 
Actually, I've visited that site before. Lots of good content.


There aren't that many threads here yet, so I like it when old ones are brought back from the dead.

It seems to me the administrators like to keep a tidy house.

That can be a turnoff for some, but your threads never get buried like on some other forums.

I am going to pick up lullaby and Pattern Recognition this week.

Chuck should do a weblog like William Gibson.

I'd like to read that.

I've read Survivor, Invisible Monsters and really enjoyed them. I've checked out the site before, it's a cool site. I found the address for Chucks agent thanks to the site and sent Chuck a letter, he replied really quickly and sent me some cool stuff, he's a top quy.:cool:

What did you think of Survivor? I really enjoyed it, really funny with a dark edge to it.
 
I have seen Fight Club but didn't actually read the book. I have however read "Choke" - it is excellent.

I too keep meaning to read more of his stuff - he is pretty unique and i like the darker grittier side to his work. It's not always comfortable reading but it's extremely rivetting. Ace sense of humour...very dark.

Has anyone actually read "Lullaby" - I nearly bought it the other day, but am slightly sensitive about some of the issues involved...is it particularly harrowing?
 
I've got a couple of his books on my to read pile. My brother gave them to me on account of I'd lent him something that made him think I'd like them. But I can't remember what it was I'd lent him. Anyhoo, he did say he'd read Fight Club but thought his other books were better, so it's his other books he lent me.
 
I've read Survivor, Choke and Lullaby.

By far the best was Survivor, then Lullaby, then Choke.

I found Lullaby to be the least graphic of the three although there is some necrophilia in there that may disgust some, and the end is none too pretty. Some of the things that happen in it are seriously difficult to believe, but if you just accept them it is a great book with a very good ending.

The whole idea of the lullaby killing children is over after the first few chapters and the rest of the book is basically about how they try to hunt down all the copies of the poem and destroy them. Sadly the middle is rather dull, but overall it is very good, just not quite as good as Survivor.
 
Thanks for that - I may give it a try then...I just didn't want particularly to read a book that dealt with cot death over and over again.

Maybe I'll try Survivor too - I actually bought it for my brother (along with , is it "Invisible Monster"?) for Christmas..... should have read them first!!
 
books read

i've read choke and lullaby, choke was excellent really enjoyed it but did the stlye remind anyone of Douglas Coupland?

i forgot that i'd read lullaby untill i read igkuk's reply - i thought it started bravely and just petered out - read like a deadline casualty.

I recently finished Survivor, and I'd read Choke earlier, and I loved both of them! So incredibly dark!

Palahniuk is one to watch! I love him!

I'm just watching the movie Fight Club and will probably buy one of Palahniuk's book next month. So which one is the best? Survivor?
I heard the book Fight Club has a different ending than the movie?! So is it better or worse than the movie ending?
 
I saw him speak at the University of Pennsylvania probably 3 years ago now. What a character this guy is, I'll leave it at that.

I've read Invisible Monsters and didn't enjoy it. So many people rave about this book, and more power to them. I, for whatever reason, was unable to get into it.

Diary, his latest novel, blew me away. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys his other work and/or this "type" of book.
 
I've read Fight Club and Choke. FC stunned me (no pun intended) when I was getting into how this guy wrote, but I thought it lost steam after awhile, then picked up a bit at the end. I also liked Choke but I wasn't surprised by his stuff the second time and his weaknesses were more obvious. I think his best stuff is coming.
 
I've read all of Palahniuk, except for his latest (Stranger than Fiction??). I think Fight Club is the best of his books, followed by Invisible Monster and Survivor. Didn't care too much for Diary or Choke. :(
 
I just finished Fight Club and it's gorgeous. I thought the movie was good, but it is crap in comparison to the book. These people are outreagous crazy and I love them. The book is so cool. It made me laugh out loud several times. I like the way Palahniuk repeats passages and sentences to give them more impact. That guy is great and I don't have a clue how somebody can make up such a story.

The movie seems to have a whole different meaning.
It centers around buying things you don't need in order to become happy. The book is about the destruction of civilization itself. Project Mayhem doesn't just want to free people of Ikea furniture, they want to free them of history and of everything they own. They have a dream of living the life of a primitive culture and try to bomb humanity back to the stoneage.

Some ideas are weird and twisted but others shift your familar way of thinking. That's a book to rock foundations.
