Challenge: Write a Short Story in a Week

This is a challenge for all the writers out there. I propose a challenge whereby members choose ten random words - which members will submit one week before the challenge starts - for the purpose of writing a short story (minimum 5,000 words up to a maximum of 10,000 words), to do with as you will. You may post your short stories for feedback and critique's from other members of the forum. :popcorn:

You must have:
Title:
Author name or handle:
Genre of story:
Random words used:
Word Count: (minimum 5,000 words up to a maximum of 10,000 words)

listed at the top of your post if you wish other members to critique it.

If you critique any of the stories that get posted, note that they will all be rough drafts and in need of serious work to be published - so don't be too harsh. :love:

This is a fun exercise, don't take it seriously.:lol: There is no obligation to join this thread. I do ask that at least a few members submit their stories for review, to give members practice at critiquing other stories and also receiving critiques.

The Random words will be chosen from the first ten members to offer their random words, to make it fair, only one random word from each of the first ten members will make it onto the list.

I am now taking suggestions for Random Words (please make them Challenging). The challenge starts Saturday, so get your random words in before then.

The purpose of this challenge is to get those creative juices flowing, stuck in a rut? Got writer's block? Procrastinating? Then, this challenge is for you. Kick start your imagination and get writing. :D

cromulent - Dictionary.com defines it as meaning fine or acceptable.
embiggen - The literal meaning of embiggen is to make something larger.
huderon - Scot.(?) obs. lazy {or slovenly, according to Jamieson}
Aquablue - is a French science fiction graphic novel by writer Thierry Cailleteau with several artists, Olivier Vatine (first volumes) and Ciro Tota (middle volumes) and Stéphane Brangier ('Siro', latest volumes). An adventure and military-themed series, it also places a lot of weight on interesting characters, ecological themes and criticism of colonial exploitation. Much of the series has been translated into German and parts into English.

Please write the definition of your words so that it may be used in the correct context.

The random word chosen from Sparkchaser is cromulent Homer Simpson would be proud :lol:
 
Finnimbrun - A trinket or knick-knack

autolatry - the worship of one's self

bombilate - to loudly hum or buzz continuously

gongoozler - an idle spectator

pyknic (for that pun you can see coming) - short and fat

flibbertigibbet - an overly silly person

Blandiose - Adjective describing something that wants to be grand (or has pretentious grandeur) but is only bland.

Bogglish - To be uncertain, doubtful or a wee bit skittish about something

widdershins - anticlockwise

deasil - clockwise
 
So many good words to choose from Sparhawk's word is deasil. Thanks for joining in.

Only 8 more Random words to go before we start the challenge on Saturday.

If there are not enough random words, we'll go back to the start and go through the list until we have 10.

otiose - Serving no practical purpose or result

bloviate - To discourse at length in a pompous or boastful manner

synecdoche - a figure of speech in which a term for a part of something is used to refer to the whole of something, or vice-versa

perspicuous - Clearly expressed or presented; easy to understand

metonymy - Reference to something or someone by naming one of its attributes. (Ex. The pen is mightier than the sword.)

persiflage - a frivolous or flippant style of treating a subject.

Truth be told, short stories are not me, or long stories either.
Poetry at most, and doggerel sometimes. :whistling:
But I hope some others have taken you up on your challenge.

No you are not the only one. I am also busy writing a story. I just hope that A. I finish it in time and B. It is long enough. :lol:
 
By some one else who shall remain anonymous:

'Tis customary to circumambulate
deasil 'round the chantry
widdershins is more chancy
and will not embiggen
one's luck.
Unless one is huderon
and merely thinks it otiose,
to bombilate one's persiflage
of the ancient rite
is neither wise
nor cromulent.
If I practice autolatry
shall I turn about myself?
Feet entangled I fall
into a synecdoche
of myself.
