Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials

Anyone else read these? I recently ran through them and LOVED them. They are billed as young adult, but certainly cerebral and thought-provoking for any age. edited to add the titles: The Golden Compass, The Subtle KNife and The Amber Spyglass.

What do you use as a bookmark?

bookmark Right now I am using my son's favorite flashcard (a green truck) from the Baby Einstein series. That way we don't lose it, and I can pull it out to cheer him up in emergencies! :)

    Diana Gabaldon: Outlander

The Fiery Cross I guess out of all Diana's books, The Fiery Cross took the most "concentration," but I did like it quuite a bit. I'm very invested in the series and characters though and can't wait for the next one.

    Umberto Eco

Umberto Oh, I tried to hard to like "The Island of the Day Before," but I just couldn't get there. I even picked it for book group, and it was a big disappointment for all.

    Possession?

Possession by A.S. Byatt is one of my favorite books, but the recent movie adaptation starring Gwyneth Paltrow never came to my area. Has anyone who read the book seen it, and if so, how did it compare? TIA!

John Irving: The World According To Garp

I went through an Irving phase and read quite a few of his books, but Garp was my least favorite. I think the imagery of the accident and other things just disturbed me. I loved A Prayer for Owen Meany -- that's my favorite.
