David Brin has written a terrific series of books (the Uplift novels) that posit excellent extrapolations into the future, with apes and dolphins cast as well-realized characters along with a multitude of alien races. Some people start with Sun Diver, but I say go right to Startide Rising, which...
Not only "obscure" but almost devoid of the usual sf or fantasy trappings, here's what Library Journal calls "what may be the first rock n roll time-travel novel. Ray Chackleford is a self-employed electronics repairman whose marriage is foundering and whose father has recently died. These...
I'll read straight through if all books are available. And if there's a stretch between publication of the next in the series, I'll try to reread the previous books. Once I've read a series a few times, I might reread the book previous to the new release. I am a series junkie and the third...
The whole classification of students into just four groups is weak, as it seems the G's can do no bad, and the S's are a bad lot, with R's and H's only vaguely sketched out at best. Has anyone tried to apply Myers-Briggs to the four houses? ;)
I'm tempted to read Housekeeping, although I was really drawn to this particular story.
"I wish I could leave you certain of the images in my mind, because they are so beautiful that I hate to think they will be extinguished when I am ... A moment is such a slight thing, I mean, that its...
I've not come across many novels where the letters were addressed to me.
I thought there were mysteries regarding his grandfather and his fear about the Boughton son and his wife that provided a tension that pulled me through the story. The whole book is a meditation on grace, what...
I'm pretty sure I warned you! BTW, the other two parts are out, though the third part may not be in paperback yet. You can always get it at the library! ;) I haven't picked up Book of the Dead, the last book, but without spoiling anything, it pulls some characters from what otherwise seemed like...
Rereading this wonderful book again. I just love it. The language and story are gentle, luminous with grace. Robinson creates a certain tension that keeps you reading, yet the pace is leisurely and observant. Deserving of all the awards it's received, it really ought to be discussed here!
I actually sent a copy of this book to Richard Nixon when he was president. Got a very nice note from the Office of the President that the book would have a special place in his library! :D :D
"What kind of name is Popinjay?!"
"It's Popijay's name, sir!"
"Well, I don't like it!"...
Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston ( web site ) have a Sherlock Holmseian protagonist throughout many of their "horror" novels that involve mysteries. Check their list on their Web site. Good stuff!
Been a long time since I looked at what I wrought here! :o
Keep those recommendations coming, but remember those roots!
Best Chandler line:
"I tried to wipe the floor off my shoulder."
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child seem to follow the Crichton formula to a certain extent, though there's no "preaching" ... and they have kept to series characters in mostly self-contained books. The Relic and Reliquary are two that are linked most directly. Lately, they have a trilogy going...
