    Anyone read Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco?

    Re. Pendulum I read The Name of the Rose and thoroughly enjoyed it. (The movie is very good also.) However, I began to read Pendulum and thought it was pretentious, verbose and pedantic. The writing just didn't fit the genre.

    Looking for Books with Gritty, Police Story (fiction)

    Can anyone recommend to me any fiction books with a gritty police story? I am thinking along the lines of NYPD Blues or Hill Street Blues. Any authors you recommend?
