Conan Doyle

What is wrong with a Palm Handheld? I can read anywhere I want with it, and I mostly choose classics from Project Gutenberg. I do read a ton of paper books for my contemporary lit fix, but I read all the classics on my handheld and I can carry around ten or so at a time. Nothing wrong with it...

Joanna,
Sounds good to me. :)

indeed it seems like a splendid idea. i'd get one myself if i thought i'd be able to figure out how to use it! i was merely saying that one imagines reading a bit of Sherlock from a dusty, musty tome, sitting in a large, over-stuffed chair, next to a roaring fire by gas light, and not on a hi-tech gizmo. :)

I do have such a Sherlock Holmes book, but it is in storage in Toronto and I am finishing grad school in New Zealand right now, so one takes what one can get :)

My trusty Clie handheld is showing its age unfortunately, and it resents every time I change the batteries, which is kind of a pain. But the new ones don't even have changeable batteries, you have to recharge them, which worries me. What if I am somewhere where I can't recharge it? I like being able to use regular batteries. Now if only they did not reset the handheld every time I change them...

So, back to my question, has anyone read any other Conan Doyle?

Joanna C--I just have a book of a few of his stories. Currently about to start A Case of Identity. I loved A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four. I think I enjoy how it's written the most. Any recommendations that I may not know of?

Awesome article Beer good. I really enjoyed reading that.

Also, I am a big fan of Christopher Morley's 'The Haunted Bookshop'.

I plan on reading more of the Professor Challenger books. I've only read "The Lost World" at this time. It started out kind of slow, but once it hit about the middle point I think? I was most certainly hooked. One of the characters was perfectly cast as Errol Flynn in my head. Of course, I know one of the film adaptations has Claude Rains as Challenger, and that I'm perfectly fine with.

Reading the entire collection of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" I was struck by Doyle love again. It's been awhile since I've read some of them and others I had not gotten around to. Holmes is always a surprise it seems when you read the original stories.

That article was pretty awesome. I downloaded "Through the Magic Door" for future e-reading.

I was reading a selection of vampire stories as a festive Halloween inspired choice and found that I really enjoyed "The Parasite" that Doyle wrote. Rather than the traditional bloodsucker, it was a vampire that stole energy.

On an SH binge recently. I've never read the latter novels and stories, and shall be looking forward to sinking my teeth into them early next year.

Apparently there's a Sherlock Holmes TV series recently. Anyone seen that?

Yup, the BBC put out Sherlock, but "true" Holmes fans have mourned the lack.
We both thought it was a heckuva good series. We've only seen the first season, second season being made/telecast at present.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Holmes, and captures both the twitchness and eccentricities of Holmes. Yes, it's different. So what. ;) I'd recommend at least trying it DS.

I'm all for trying a new spin on a good classic. Poor analogy, but the new Battlestar Galactica (which I'm only now getting around to watching) is pretty damn good.

I have to say Downey jr's Sherlock while enjoyable didn't really do it for me. I'll give the series a go, definitely. Thanks pont!

We're watching the new Battlestar as well, yeah, verra good indeed! I was reluctant at first, but actually, it's better than the original.

I like Downey, and in the first one, I thought the first bit caught Holmes well, but Downey was better at Charlie Chaplin.

Damn right it is.

How far into it are you?

I'm halfway through the first season, so don't spoil anything for me! I loved the incredibly tight, uh, fight scenes with the Cylons. And Grace Park is better here than in the short snippets I saw of Hawaii Five-O.

To keep myself on topic though (so the moderators don't kick my ass), I have to seen this extreme handsome 3-volume set of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes? Wonderfully huge and looks awesome on a bookshelf. Here and here.

I forgot: sparky you're a moderator here!!! In your honour I shall go watch a couple of episodes of BSG.

Annotated Set: Uh, it's freaking expensive.

The list price is freaking expensive. The Amazon price is just expensive. :p

Remember though, that you'd pay the list price at Borders.

Say hello to Cally and Starbuck for me. ai5.photobucket.com_albums_y187_sparkchaser1998_smileys_naughty.gif

I was thinking about getting the edition of the complete Sherlock Holmes from Barnes & Noble's leatherbound series until I was reading reviews that mention the insane amount of typos present in the volume. Still I think I'd like to have the whole set of Holmes canon at some point. The hardcover book I possess only has 37 of the short stories and The Hound of the Baskervilles.
