Do you have a tattoo...

Relax, I was just kidding. Besides, I'm Swedish, so if I didn't share that passion I wouldn't be writing this in English, would I?

All I'm saying is that if I were to permanently engrave something on my body, I'd want to be exactly sure what it was. And unless I learn Arabic or Chinese myself, I'd always be wondering if it really said what the tattoo guy told me it said. Oh well, off topic. Sorry.

I know a story about an underage girl who had a tattoo of some Chinese symbols. She asked for her name, instead it read 'Spice Girls'

Shame on her is what I say, she should have done some research before getting it done! I don't mind tattoos but I wouldn't want one, I know I wouldn't like it after I'd had it done!

I've got a tattoo, and regret it tremendously. They hurt, and a lot. Ouch.

Oh, but as to the fading thing. When I got mine (about six years ago) the tattooist said he was using this new ink that would never fade. At the time, I thought it was merely an excuse for him to charge over the odds, but it hasn't faded. But as someone already said, you can get them re-coloured. Ouch.

My old neighbour was doing her laundry one day and I noticed the Japanese katakana she had written about her ankle. I asked about it, and she told me it was her name. I asked if she'd been to Japan, and she said that she hadn't, but had liked the idea. I took a closer look and noticed that the pronounciation was quite obviously incorrect, and one of the symbols was missing a stroke. I didn't say anything because I felt it was best she didn't know, but it really made me wonder why someone would have something written that they couldn't understand themselves.

I don't like the idea of tattoos on myself, but I think for spiritual and cultural reasons they can be very powerful. I also think that it can really help some people to remember things that have given them strength. It's just the trendy ones I have a problem with, like getting a chinese character on the back of your neck, or getting a fairy on your lower back. What does that mean? When you're 70, what will you think of the wrinkly fairy? The ones that crack me up are the dolphins on the lower belly... I wonder how that woman is going to feel about the whale that's created when she has stretch marks...

But to each their own. I have no reason to get one at this time .

I remember watching a documentary on neo-nazis, where one skinhead had tattooed the SS symbol on his head. The interviewer asked him what he would do if some day he didn't want to show that off to everyone - say, if he needed to get a job or meet his girlfriend's parents.

"Well, duh, I'll just grow my hair back."

"And what happens when you're older and your hair starts falling out?"

"..."

He hadn't thought of that.

Eyeliner. If I ever get tired of it I'll just comb my bangs over my eyes.

I've got an oriental dragon tattooed on my right shoulder blade. I didn't find it too painful and I really want another one. A strawberry on my hipbone would be good.

Good post Kookamoor. It also pretty well sums up my feelings. btw, I would not even trust you to tatoo symbols on me that I do not know the meaning.

I thought about it for ages (29 years even, maybe), but then it didn't hurt as much as I'd expected, and I haven't regretted it for a second (of about two years). I told the tattooist I wanted a wandering wolf under a new moon, and he drew it free-hand.

I couldn't imagine having a tattoo I didn't know what it meant, or that didn't have an emotional significance...

I have a tattoo on my left hip. Basically the only time it is seen is when I am in a bathing suit. I specifically wanted it somewhere easy to hide. As much as I love it, I knew I would have to cover up a tattoo for future employment.

It is of a naked fair, wings spread and arms out with long blonde hair flowing around. It is only about 4 - 5 inches high. I got it with two friends, who also got the exact same one.

It didn't hurt all that much.

P.S Kaolas are marsupials......

When ppl say they like my tattoo I try to remember to say "I agree" rather than "Thank you" - so: I agree!

I want a tattoo. I already have it picked out. It will be the World Snake from Norse mythology, Jormungand, and it will start at my wrist with its mouth opened and wrap up and around my arm and end at my shoulder. I have to wait until I turn 18 though! T_T

I can say honestly that I have not ever considered having a tattoo. I know myself too well, I'd be bored with it after a while, and it would aggravate me and irritate me no end, I'd have to have it removed, and it would leave a scar, and then that would upset me.
I have enough flaws without causing a scar I don't earn.

i actually have three, which, if you met me, would seem very surprising...i got a rose when i was 18 which i designed (but the artist drew), which was my representation of beauty at the time, and is also my middle name, and that one is on my right hip-area...then i designed a cross with a rainbow arching over it and then 12 stars around it in a circle - this one has all sorts of spiritual significance to me, and is not really visible to the world (it's on my left rib cage - that one hurt, i can tell ya!)...and my third and favorite is an angel i drew myself - it is just an outline, of a star with angel wings, and it is on my right shoulder-blade-area, making it the most visible, since it can be seen when i wear most tank tops...but it is very small and a simple outline, which is nice. and actually, my avatar is a photo-shopped pic of that one. and it represents a lot of things i believe.

my tattoos were things that were the outgrowth of who i was when i got them, and they all mean things that will always be a part of me, even if i do grow out of the need to have them etched into my skin permanently (which i have)...but i dont regret them. they are part of who i am now, and to regret them would be a form of self-dislike, which is not something i make a habit of feeling. but i am at a point now where i would not get another one. that need is gone for me.

so, yea, i dont really have advice beyond: only get something that you know for sure you will never grow out of having a connection with.
